The year is 1968. Yvon Chouinard packs his van with an array of outdoor equipment, unsure of what is to come along his journey. Hiking boots, surf boards, blankets, nonperishable food, scaling equipment, and much more all stuffed into his rusty Volkswagen van. He charted his course down the shoreline of California all the way down to Latin America. A destination free journey of discovery.

Making stops along the shorelines of California to catch the waves and meet the local people, Chouniard immersed himself in the local culture wherever he went. Eventually making his way down to Latin America, Chouinard set up camp in rainy Patagonia. What began as a journey of exploration quickly turned into a mission of protection. The bustling wildlife and rolling mountains of Patagonia consumed Chouinard.

During his travels, Chouinard saw first hand the negative impact his company had on the environment. Deeply impacted by his discoveries, Chouinard sought to actively change his company’s values and manufacturing processes. The start of a movement—Patagonia.

“Simplicity and durability.”

“We are in the business to save our planet.”
