Bringing in Black historical, contemporary thinkers, writers, artists to empower Black students. We need to bring these ideas to the class so that students can learn about specific experiences while empowering students. For example we could use the conversation of slavery in Canada, by teaching students there was slavery, however by entering the modes of resistance used by the Maroons in Jamaica we can teach students about the African diaspora into Canada, this can connect to unity because many of the Maroons worked together to fight off the British, as well as worked together to carve a path for themselves in Halifax and the development of Citadel Hill.
If possible introducing students to Black Queer authors such as Bell Hooks to think critically about the intersectionality between gender, race, and disability rights.
There is a book called Invisible Boy by Harrison Mooney that depicts the life of a Black boy adopted by a White Evangelical family and navigating the perils that come with. This can be used as a way to help Black students connect to the sixties scoop; where Indigenous children were taken from their families without their consent and forced to assimilate into European culture.
The novel The Day-Breakers by Micheal Fraser caputres the Black- Canadian soldiers sacrificed who fought for during the American Civil War. The poems capture their voices and gives a new perspective of black history and how Black Loyalist migrated to Canada.
Blackish is a tv show that highlights a modern Black family and how they navigate with their black identities while surrounding by upper class White families. The show touches on several topics such as Patriarchy, Mental health, Bi-racial identities, and Anti-Black Racism. This show can be used a spring board into classroom discussions.
We can position Black history as not just as in the afterlife of slavery.
Using Black Girl Magic, as a way to humanize Black Women and their Bodies, and their beauty.
Highlighting the Nia Centre for the Arts as a hub for black aesthetics and inventiveness. Many of the events and workshops that the Nia Centre puts on are student friendly.
