The research session on Thursday was a great starting point to start looking for games to research. I don't know a wide variety of games, and the ones I do know weren't helpful for my project. The behind the scenes of the game 'Gris' was really inspiring because of how important the art aspect of game design was to their game. You can see how the artwork heavily influences the game and how you feel while playing it. The use of watercolour feels melancholy and calming.
I want to discover some more games that rely on the artwork to create an atmosphere while you play.

During this course I've seen my art grow and my skills develop. For my FMP I want to continue trying new things and build my skills by researching methods and techniques. I've used this video for research before but its a great exploration of using shape and silhouettes to create interesting character designs without focusing too much on details.

Art Block!

Art Block is something that I get often, and struggle to get motivation to create something. This article is about David Zinn, an artist that draws with chalk on buildings and pavements. He said "Out on the sidewalk in the middle of the day, you don’t have time to wait for the best idea, because if you wait it will get dark, or it will start to rain,” he continues. “And you’ll go home and you’ll have created nothing. If you’re going to draw anything today you better start, because it will be dark eventually and it’ll be too late", which I thought was really inspiring!

Psychology Of Games

Below is an interesting essay about why we enjoy games and how to design an effective game. In it's most simple form we enjoy gaming to learn, feel control, relatability and escapism. It's important at the start to recognize your audience which many designers do through 'user profiling. It helps you understand what type of game you are creating, and how your audience is going to relate to it.

This can be explored through artistic design as well as technical. For example: how do you immerse the player and how does the design of the character help the relatability. The type of game I want to make would rely on the art more than anything else. So this would be marketed for people more interested in visual storytelling etc.

It was very fascinating to watch the process of a concept artist. Many interesting techniques were mentioned on how to make the process quicker and more efficient. Many which give illusion of detail.
One technique which was smart was 'painting and rendering' over 3D models which can useful to explore 'more dynamic compositions without having to labour over drawing them'.
Lots of good tips were given like make sure to use 2 or 3 brushes, use references and use the lasso tool and shape tool to make unique shapes.

Arty games like 'Journey' and 'Gris pair perfectly with a good soundtrack to intensify the visuals. The colours, art style, story and sounds harmoniously create unique atmospheres or sometimes emotional ones.
It's a game about finding your purpose, using monochrome colours and open space. You can meet others players without having to talk to them, you simply go on a journey together.
The immersive experience of this game is a comforting one, the only goal being a journey to the mountain on the horizon. The choices taken with the art really compliments the simple gameplay: simple colours, simple goals, not too much to see or do. It's a unique type of escapism where you don't have to worry about anything, you just keep moving forward.

A personal game I like which I think could be useful in my research is 'Neko Atsume'. I think this is a perfect example of a laid-back game that has simple mechanics and goals with a specific art-style. I enjoy very easy and chill games like this because sometimes it's nice to have a break from competitions and battles. The artwork reflects the gameplay; it's cutesy and simple, which markets it to a specific audience just by looking at the art. Apart from the bright colours and lack of detail, the round cat designs are calming to me because each cat has the same shape, it's a comforting game.

Nick Yee and his team gathered data from over 140,000 people who play games. They created 12 gamer motivations found in different types of games- made of combinations of community, design, power, challenge, excitement etc. The motivations consist inside, 3 major groups:
♡ Immersion creativity- people with openness, and creativity
♡ Action social- more outgoing people
♡ Mastery achievement- strategic, challenge loving people
They found a correlation between these personality traits and gaming motivations.
I took the test they created and found myself in the Immersion Creativity section, which I would say is very accurate. I would like to think the game I create will come under this section, as it is the type of game I'm familiar with and enjoy.
