In my opinion, using maths to think critically, is a good way to develop a set of very useful skills for students , especially if they learn in a collaborative way, analysing each other’s strategies, and appreciating different types of solutions, according to different students'competences.In this way students learn to respect themselves and the others. Learning other ways to teach, as good practice, helps us to try ho help our students more and more.

What I find really interesting is that the Project Maths started with changing the national syllabus and investing in teacher professional development. In Italy, I have the impression that "competences" is only a word introduced in teachers' guides. There isn't a central project, a big idea. Everything is left to the personal interest, motivation, need to change and improve oneself.

Mine is more a bitter reflection than a comment. I was wondering why many European countries have been making so such big efforts for the development of key competences, while Italy is miles back .... The project Maths is excellent. I would like to be trained so that I can help my students to start problem solving. I also think that one main obstacle is the parents; thinking of this new method because as stated in the clip sometimes change is not comfortable. We also need to educate and train the parents in order for them to understand and help their children in their daily problem solving tasks.

I find this project quite interesting, as for the big challenges it implies for the teachers. I am sure all Irish students like Maths and are successful in learning it. It should be extented to the other subjects. We also need a real reformation in curricula. In my experience of math teacher, I found that it is really important to let the students understand how and why a math concept works, not only to memorize a procedure. I admit I still use a lesson mostly teacher centred, and don't use to organize work teams (I've got too much students and too little time), even if I recognise it should be a really good thing to do.

I too agree with Dorina from Romania. This is the right way to face, deal with and solve a problem.
Other colleagues in this padlet have pointed out that single teachers too can make a difference, even when the school system has not yet provided the tools to attain goals that have nonetheless been established ( as in the Italian situation).
True, better little than nothing! However in this way, change will take much longer and individual teachers that set off on such an enterprise will have to fight against students and families AND same subject colleagues that are unfamiliar with a different approach to teaching and learning.
A real reform is needed in this country, not just one that starts with the final state exam or that makes it mandatory to have a subject taught with the CLIL methodology in the LAST year of school!

we teach maths and other subjects for exams, not for life. Unfortunately, the results of exams are life for students as well for schools as schools are rated here. Competence-based learning should be implemented in every school, but what about final exams? In Italy a reform of exams is underway: however, no assessment of competences is mentioned in the reform, just the usual written exams and the oral interview! I rest my case.

I think that the Irish experience of implementing this key skill is a result of a huge work to develop their educational system. Putting students in a face to face problem would lead them to use their previously learnt item in order to find solutions. Hopefully we'll have the change to see more practical videos or tips of implementing this method in teaching other subjects not only Maths.

Interesting the explanation, we know the skills but we must see if it is possible to adopt the reform maths from Ireland to every country. We want also our student to improve their skill by problem solving, collaboration and by usin the TICs. New approach of course is important but the important thing is to use the skills in real live. We use every time problem solving. But here I see only concepts, sorry PBL is the base to go ahead, I don't understand where is the new method. I like the Project Maths. Teacher centred education is a big problem and it takes time and good will to change it. Ireland had straight to do so even the parents were unsatisfied in the beginning. Some things are the same overall. It is great that pupils are more involved in their learning process and have good results on final exames. The most important - they are prepared for future education and real life. I wish that it will happen with time in my country that face the same problems like Ireland before the reform. I also notice that Ireland ensured a lot of fonds in techer professional development. No reform could survive without the willing and well preapeared teachers.

I think that the maths project adopted in Ireland is very interesting and it can be used for different other subjects. The students have to be linked to an aproach of concretness. It's good to see that they're trying hard to change things for the better in Ireland! The plan sounds great, but how's it working in practical terms? In these days I heard of an Italian student, Valerio Pagliarino, who has developed and applied maths competences in a 21st century way... maybe he's a Genius, but frankly I felt proud for him and his school Teachers... (Italian).
Of course changes in our school system are needed, though something is already going on... hopefully the Irish way of tackling innovation could be adopted in Italy (particularly in the way they granted public financial support to this program!)

The Irish project shows us a different way of facing innovation: the country stakeholders gave path to a whole set of innovative procedures and goals, at each level, for all schools and starting from the teachers. Not the same happened in Italy, unfortunately.

Project Maths in Ireland sounds realistic and really up to date. I think in our schools we still organise our work in aim to pass the exams. Nevertheless there has been an attempt from the Ministry of Education to concentrate on competences which are far more than passing exams. Such as were mentioned in the video-problem solving strategies and so on.

I was really impressed by the Irish Case Study, because many Italian students have difficulties in Maths and have very poor results in final exams. So the Project Maths could be really useful in Italian Education System, changing the syllabus, aligning the assessment with the learning outcomes and – above all – including a big investment in teacher professional development. Moreover, the Irish Education System reform sounds really interesting, because the key skills are based on the competences set out in the European Framework for Key Competences for Lifelong Learning, but are adapted to suit the Irish context. While curriculum and assessment reforms are led from the centre, schools are encouraged to develop competences in ways that work best for them. I hope this kind of reform will be developed in Italy

Maths in Portugal is one of the key subjects of the curriculum, however it is an area at which many students struggle. There have been attempts to modernize the way it is taught, but probably they weren't 100% successful because it takes time ( and money) to implment new methodolgies and resources ( as well as strategies) in school.
Mentalities take a few years to change ( sometimes centuries) , so it is only natural to be thinking about it now. However, some teachers in Portugal have already used these new skills to enhance the teaching of Maths.
I reckon students will still have to make some effort to engage with the complexity of this abstract language, but presenting it in a more concrete way as show by the irish case will definitely help the students become more proficient.

I think the idea of Project Maths, in Ireland, is really interesting. It develops lots of useful skills for the 21st century workers: collaborative work, sharing experiences, being creative, being able to solve problems ...They are encouraged to find their own solution, the one that is relevant to them. I really enjoyed the video and to see that some countries are revising their assessment to meet the 21st century competences. I would love to know more about this process. In Portugal, final individual tests are quite usual and important in some grades to pass or get into the university. In my opinion it is absolutely necessary to evaluate many skills (like collaborative and communication skills, and autonomy in learning) that are hard to evaluate in a test. How can this be done in a way that can be compared across schools and teachers? I would love and hope to learn also about this.

I think it is very important to develop strategies to foster student’s awareness of their process of leanrning and ways that work best for them, individually. I am use to propose an initial test in which they realize in what way they best remember and learn, among 3 main types of learning styles, with three different scores; then, they have to develope the one in which they have achieved the lower score by activities very far from school one, such as gardening, chess, tryin to learn another language, listen toi the radio, writing a page of a diary, and so on.

Teacher have really to be a creative facilitator , for example integrating projects of different kind in one project to integrate different approach, actrivities and competences. An example in my experience of this year: conciliate a project for the reinforcement of social and of civic competences, to implement Legality in our difficult context, crossing the skills the student could improve in the extracurricular activities with other one in which we can stimulate the development of different competence, for example working in group, or trasversal competences such as digital one, critical thinking… I wish I show you a part ot this project I am elaborating for a second class of secondary school; it is linked and integrated with an initiative of a tv network. This video is really interesting. After watching it, I immediately thought I wish I were there, in Ireland. As matter of fact Ireland's learning approach is new and fresh. The key skills are based on the competences set out in the European Framework for Key Competences, but suit the Irish context and are embedded into the learning outcomes of the formal curriculum and assessment. So this was a great change in Ireland that it is aligned with the newest learning approach, centred on students and not on teachers.

This Maths project aims to improve such skills as reasoning, sense-making and problem-solving, in a collaborative way and use technology to support students' learning. I think that this Irish Project should be taken as example for other countries and not only for Maths.

In Ireland this reform was a great change so schools also are encouraged to develop teachers' competences in order to make students more prepared for living in the real world.

I have always thought that maths plays a very important role in our lives and this video shows it. Maths can improve our standards of living and it's a pity that Italy as well has a high rate of children failing their maths tests. Maths can be learned as if it were something funny but our government policies insist on assessment and grades. I am impressed of how Ireland has made it in this project. I believe that Mathematics is a subject where key skills can play an important role to the futures of the involved students. Thinking, undetstanding, collaborating, analyzing... these are some of the values they are available to approach, while participating on this project. I like the NON -exams approach to solving problems, using scenarios to chose the most effective solution. I appreciate how teachers and students collaborate and interact. "Project maths" in Ireland sounds really impressive and I can't wait to learn more about it! In my country all subjects are mainly exam-centered, but not competence-based. Having a school-leaver at home I can clearly feel the stress and fear for each mark at school and the exams awaiting ahead. As a teacher at secondary school I even get strong "recommendations" to give my students a certain number of marks per term. I believe that the Irish examle is worth following, as it motivates students by giving a clear understandingthat they are learning for life, not fore the sake of the exam.

I would tell my own experience. When I was a student I did not like math, and did not have good results. I think in Romania it would be difficult to implement it because somehow the Maths teachers think that the students do not work as much as the teachers would like them to. But it's not about the quantity, it is the quality of teaching that should be effective. Maths teachers are not creative. This project is a demonstration of the importance of transversal competence: the use of maths in a non academic context can lead to gain the important attitude to creativity, applying knowledge to different situations. This is the competence model we have to look for, even if we don’t have many resources. In Ireland, integrating these key competences to curriculum is a successful step. I had a chance to search Ireland education system in my master degree class and that video contributed my past study. Ireland curriculum works with modules and this flexibility makes easier to apply key competences In the education system and curriculum.

Implement key competences it's a hard work but this is a really good example. Our technology constantly envolving require a different perspective of education. Basecally we need to create significant knowladgde, motivational knowladge, and project maths it's a good example.

I think Irish initiative is very challenging as well as a good example to renew and implement maths education approches. Here in Italy, and particularly in some regions, most of our students are getting bad scores in the externally set and marked exam called "Invalsi".
I hope that the Irish project will be useful to inspire new ideas, approaches and practices

Teaching Maths in Italy has always been challenging because umanistic subjects have been always considered more interesting and students, some outstanding apart, often dislike this subject. The result is that in the International test they get low marks.
It would be really fine to find an innovative method that could help teachers to change this non positive situation
