To what extent can it be said that your chosen film movement represents an expressionist as opposed to a realist approach to filmmaking?

- Strike expressionist elements: over exaggerated, biomechanical acting, melodramatic acting (facial expressions, body language, gestures). The purpose of this is to fully get emotions across to the spectator
without the need for sound.
-Strike realist elements: the events the film is based off are in a logical and chronological order. Elements of realism are seen through the natural representation of what was happening to people in society during the Russian Revolution

‘Films without recorded speech can succeed brilliantly in communicating ideas and emotions’. How true is this statement in relation to films you have watched?

This is true in relation to the 'strike film' due to the fact that the film has continuous varying techniques in order to present emotion, for example through performance techniques and Propoganda.

Q1 - expressionistic vs realistic

Strike is more expressive than realist; the sets are abstract and stylised as an industrial background. Not only this but the expressionism is reflected in the movements/behaviours of characters - melodramatic acting.
The use of collision editing amplifies the sense of expressionism as this style of editing makes the scenes appear chaotic, which resonates with the workers' fears. 'Strike' utilises expressive film techniques throughout the film such as modernism, which encourages subjectivity and forward-thinking among spectators.
As for realism, the fact that the film is set before the Russian Revolution, a real event in history, counts towards a realist element within the film.

with the use of biomechanical acting, title screens and montage of attractions, it is clear that what we see on the screen creates a powerful message without the use of speech. this statement would be considered true as through the use of different forms of acting would be able to convey different forms of emotions depending on the way they act in a specific scene.

through using soviet montage techniques combining with influential propaganda, strike is deemed more an realistic approach which helps convey how Russia was around this time (1905 - 1917)
