A burin is a tool used in engraving. In prehistoric times it is thought that people may have used the burin to engrave bone and wood. The burin has a rounded handle and a steel shaft that protrudes from it with a very sharp cutting edge. This tool is primarily used in the Intaglio print making technique to create the grooves in the metal plate.

The artist cuts lines into the polished surface of a metal plate with a Burin or engraving tool. Lines are made by pushing the burin into the metal to carve a groove, removing a narrow strip of metal in the process.
