1. What was something new or thought about in a different way that you learned this week and why?

Something new I have thought about this week is using the “popular” people in a setting as a tool for extending the reach of health promotion programs. By getting people with the greatest social reach, you can more easily spread word and
positive ideas around events and programs you are trying to put together and run.

2. Based on best practices, how can you apply what you know in your career choice as a Health Promotion Manager?

Using best practices, I can apply different amounts, intensities, and a variety of physical activities to fit the needs of the individual. The same can be said with any aspect of that individual’s health and wellness.

3. What do you want to learn more about, and why?

One thing I would like to learn more about is how to influence behaviors. I could know every little detail about a program or health behavior, but if I can’t get a person to come to the meetings or believe that they can make a change I will not be successful in my goals and helping them achieve a healthier life.

1. What made you curious this week?

This week my girlfriend was reading a book about animal behavior, specifically on domesticated cats. This made me curious about why a person would spend so much time to write a book about house cats and then after having her explain to me, this person took almost ten years of their life to track the evolution and domestication of cats.

2. What about your thinking, learning, or work this week brought you the most satisfaction? Why?

While studying for a written exam in the exercise and nutrition practicum I was noticed that I knew all the answers on the practice quizzes and this was very satisfying. Knowing that I have this knowledge and being able to apply it to this upcoming workload felt great.

3. How did you help the class learn this week? If you feel you didn't add to class or feel the need to contribute more consider what can you do next week to help other learners more?

While working in our small groups I brought up the point that a way to create sustained change and how to make change more desirable that you should start by adding healthy behaviors before trying to take away unhealthy behaviors. By explaining that this can build self-efficacy, leading to greater sustained change.

Ideas can change the world, but only when coupled with influence - the ability to change hearts, minds, and behavior.

Muhammud Yunus, Nobel Peace Prize Winner.

1. How can you interpret the information presented so far in the Influencer book to reflect on this statement? What principles help you agree or disagree with the statement?

Having great and innovative ideas are part of changing behaviors, the real key is being able to influence others to follow your ideas. Without being able to influence others your ideas will fall on deaf ears and you won’t be able to sustain the change you want.

2. What is your vision of wellness using the principals promoted in Workplace Wellness that Works book? Use Putnam's to imagine what is possible to create an innovative wellness program.

Using the hierarchy of needs, you can fit your programs to those you are working with. If you are working with a population that is struggling to put food on their table, you should present them with ways to recycle more and ways to get involved more with community and volunteer opportunities. But by following the hierarchy it should be possible to lead people to their best, and become self-actualized.

My groups driving question is “How do we train workplace leaders to better create and sustain wellness?”. By incorporating the six sources of influence, we can better answer this question. By using personal motivation, finding their why, we can create leaders that care more for the process of wellness. By making sure the skills these leaders need are within their scope and capabilities is also important to create a culture of wellness. By encouraging the leaders to be accepting and showing them how to enable others healthy behaviors and by not encouraging the negative behaviors we can incorporate both social ability and motivation. Finally, by incorporating a reward system, such as additional time off, for completing the training and by changing certain aspects of the worksite are also critical to changing and sustaining wellness.

The author of our Putnam book has a program that she runs about training managers to become wellness champions and we can use her as a great resource. And the chapters are labeled in ways that would be very helpful to us, like build it and make it last.

My Genius Hour project builds social capital by creating a stronger culture of wellness in a work site. By creating managers that are more receptive and supportive of their employees personal wellness behaviors they increase the total social capital of their business. The workshop would give these managers the tools to provide assistance to their employees and hopefully create a more open environment for everyone.
The major concept in our Genius Hour project is using experiential learning to give tools to the managers attending. By teaching the managers through doing activities they will learn what works for them, what works for others, and what tools and tricks they want to take back to their work sites to use with their employees

In the video they claim there are three vital behaviors for their success, those being for people to take responsibility, to make it safe to hold critical conversations, and to be accountable and to hold other accountable. The biggest take away I have from this video on my success in the future is that they saw through years of interventions that without incorporating the six sources of influence that they had failed to create any real change. Like they say in the video, there is no "silver bullet" to creating behavior change and I will need to incorporate all sources of influence I can to create and sustain behavior changes

Chapter 2:8 in Influencer and Chapter 3:7 in the Worksite Wellness That Works both address how to motivate individuals in changing behavior. How would you use this information to create a motivating way to get people to adopt the behavior you are addressing in your genius hour project?

One of the biggest ways we plan on facilitating behavior change in our middle management group is by helping them find their deeper purposes, finding their why for participating in wellness. By leading them through a deep and meaningful discussion that wellness programs are more than just losing weight, eating better, moving more, and other fairly surface level actions but can be walking your child down the aisle at their wedding or being able to live independently as an older adult. And by helping these managers find their why we can increase their buy into the wellness programs they provide, leading to greater buy in by the employees they manage.6

"Why do I/we want to be an Influencer?” and “Who do I/we want to influence?"

I want to be an influencer because it will allow me to greater change behavior of those that come to me for help. By practicing the ideas in the book influencer I will be able to motivate behavior change easier, leading to creating a positive force of change in the world. And that runs into who I want to influence, all of those around me and that come to me for assistance. If I can naturally create this feeling of healthy change to those around me, leading them to reassess and look at themselves I would consider that great success in my life.

How would you use Putnam's ideas of "Creating Meaning" for the population you are targeting in the topic for your Genius hour? As the opening states, we have to help them know their "WHY." What of the many ideas presented this week help you get buying from your group?

One of the biggest components of our genius hour program is helping the participants find their why and understanding the importance finding it. We plan on using deep discussion to help create deeper meanings and connections within wellness programs, understanding that wellness is a combination of everything around us. We hope that the rest of the retreat we are developing will also add to the idea of their why and how to incorporate that into their work sites.
