Sangue Dell is a gentlemen that had suffered from an anxiety attack and some days all he wanted to do was stay in his bed. He went to get professional help and the first thing his doctor asked him was if he wanted to talk to a mental health professional about his anxiety and stress, but he turned it down because he was ashamed. He describes how his emotions have changed some of his life and how this happens globally even Nigeria which is where he is from. The most challenging part to Sangu is the stigma that comes along with it, and one night he was told that one of his friends was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He also touches on the point of when someone is diagnosed with a mental health issue the ignorance level rises. Ever since, he has been attached to mental health he wants people to speak up against the stigma.

When she went to the professional medical field in the beginning with her issues the doctors didn't know what was going on and at first, they thought it was puberty, hormones, and other non accurate accusations. After a while the doctors finally figured out what was going on with Shawntay and she learned new ways to cope with her mental issue. She continues to take progressive steps towards fighting this illness and she keeps moving forward to look in the future. Compared to the research, Shawntay’s doctors had diagnosed her with false treatments because they didn’t know what it was, instead of aggressively looking to see what was going on.

Mental Health Existing in Fahrenhiet 451: Montag’s Coping Style

In the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury the characters’ actions indicate that mental health is present in their daily lives which includes the main character Montag. Montag handles his issue differently than Mildred. An example of mental health would be when Montag is trying to recall the book of Ecclesiastes and it isn’t developing in his mind. Granger said to Montag “‘Don’t try it will come when we need it.’” “‘All of us have photographic memories, but spend a lifetime learning how to block off the things that are really in there’” (Bradbury 144). Symbolism is mentioned in this example because whatever enters your mind will never exit even though you are trying to block it out. Dementia is also a factor because Montag isn’t remembering very important things and his mood swings have started to change which are both signs of dementia. Mildred and Montag were discussing Montag’s decision to work, and his decision hasn't been made yet but he said violent words that expressed mental health issues. “‘... I’ve got an awful feeling I want to smash things and kill things’” (Bradbury 61). An explicit symbol was indicated in this example because Montag just can’t take the stress anymore and came out and said what was on his mind. Imagery was also described because the description of words presented a picture in the audience’s head of Montag smashing items. Montag copes with his mental health issue by continuing to proceed with his job, instead of quitting his occupation just to deal with his illness. Bradbury continues to use examples of mental health issues to show how the characters deal with their problems. Montag kicked the bottle of pills and they went all over the floor which makes the audience infer that a healthy person wouldn’t just kick a pill bottle, so an issue of some type must be present in his life. “The small crystal bottle of sleeping tablets which earlier today had been filled with thirty capsules and which now lay uncapped and empty in the light of the tiny flare” (Bradbury 11). Situational irony is detected in this incident from Fahrenheit 451 because the audience doesn’t expect Montag to kick the bottle until they continue to read that the pills are on the floor. After this situation Montag doesn’t get affected with what happened so he just continues on with his life. When this is being described you can picture the bottle being kicked and the pills going all over which is the symbol imagery. He learns how to cope with his illness in healthy ways throughout his life which doesn’t end up affecting him as much as Mildred.

Mental Health Existing in Fahrenheit 451: Mildred's Coping Style

Mildred and Montag both have mental health issues, but Mildred copes with her health issue differently. In the beginning of the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Mildred is prescribed to take two pills everyday and Montag came home and noticed that the pill bottle was empty. Montag said to Mildred “‘Maybe you took two pills and forgot and took two more, and forgot again and took two more, and were so dopey you kept right on until you had thirty or forty of them in you’” (Bradbury 17). Symbolism is indicated because this can show early symptoms of dementia for Mildred. Literary symbols such as euphemism, and explicit were also key terms in this example. Euphemism was created to make the situation sound better and Bradbury used the word “dopey,” instead of saying drugged up. Explicit is when a character comes right out and says whats on their mind and Montag surely did that when he told Mildred that she took all the pills. In this example, Mildred is only supposed to be taking two pills, but she has clearly taken more than she should have and she can’t remember that she took them already so she keeps digesting them. After Mildred comes to find out that she has a mental health issue she tries to cope with the news by taking medications, or through the television. Mildred and Montag are two characters that go way back, and Montag gets hints that Mildred is starting to forget important things so he starts a conversation to see if he is correct. Montag asks Mildred “The first time we ever met, where was it, and when?” (Bradbury 40). Montag knows that Mildred would never forget these memories, but with the illness starting she doesn’t remember or know what he is talking about. Indirect characterization is hinted in this quote because this lets the audience know that Montag is very curious to see what Mildred is going to see, because he wants to see how much the illness is progressing. Due to the mental illness that these two are developing, their marriage is starting to fall apart. Throughout this horrible time for Mildred she doesn't cope with her illness in the healthiest ways, she just lets it go on and starts to use medications to help her. Mildred’s symptoms are starting to get worse because she used to talk to her next door neighbor all the time and Montag brought her up the other day, and Mildred has no idea what is going on. “‘Mildred you know that girl I was telling you about?’” “‘What girl?’” “‘The girl next door.’” “‘What girl next door?’” (Bradbury 44). There is an internal conflict with Mildred because she is forgetting everything important in her life which is starting to make her upset with her illness, which also leads to a negative coping style.

Patients with mental illness learning how to cope with their illness

Throughout the book Fahrenheit 451, the characters Montag and Mildred aren’t receiving medical treatment and in today’s world medical professionals are available to help with coping styles but there are some individuals that are neglecting the benefit of getting help. The majority of the individuals learn ways by themselves to cope with their illness. Professionals want to guarantee the most important point to patients that they are not the diagnosis but they are the individual that has been diagnosed with a mental illness that they have to deal with (Dealing). Patients will always confuse this saying, and then they will continuously think about it, until it gets to a point where they can’t continue to hear about it which then leads to them not going to get help anymore. Coping with the illness, may not be in the patient's best interest but finding a certain hobby that they like to do, is better for their mental state. Being diagnosed with a mental illness sends many difficult messages to your brain, which then makes you generate more hard feelings toward your illness, which will also make you want to isolate yourself and never go back to the doctors (Dealing). Certain individuals will not let their illness take over them, so they make appointments to see their doctor to talk about ways to cope with their illness. Patients will ask themselves why did it happen to them and professionals say “.. It’s normal to feel different things, and many people feel a combination of relief, hope, fear, shock, shame, and guilt etc” (Dealing). Individuals will continuously see signs of their mental illness and they will continue to ask what did they do to get this illness. By definition, coping strategies are used to make the hard situations get easier, and less important to daily life, so the individual can carry on with their normal life instead of thinking about their illness (Gjergji). Doing certain activities that makes you feel stress free are typically the activities that you want to do when facing the illness. Medical professionals will give you a list of coping styles that can help you be distracted from the illness, but you have to overcome yourself to beat the illness and be willing to move forward instead of hanging onto the diagnosis. Activities such as getting a pet will distract your mind and make you focus on the animal instead of you, making new friends will also distract you because you are listening to another individual learning new things about them, and especially reading which can take you to magical places (Gjergji). “Diversions are those coping skills that allow you to stop thinking about the stress free inducing situation” (Gjergji). A list of diversions is given to the patients with the illness, and they can either try it out, or not take advantage of it which will ruin their future because the illness will progressively get worse. Diversions such as “1. Write, draw, paint, photography 2. Play an instrument, sing, dance, etc. 4. Garden 5. Take a walk or drive 8. Play a game”(Gjergji). Those are just some of the coping styles that have worked on patients and medical professionals continue to use these skills to try and help the individual. Other activities such as writing all of your thoughts, concerns, and goals you have for conquering this illness is another option because it helps the individual understand what mental illness they have been diagnosed with and what their next step should be (Dealing). Mental health diagnoses are just like other diagnoses because they all take time to heal but the individual has to follow the orders given by professionals or themselves to beat the issue. Coping styles are easy to find and anyone can help such as your community, family members, mental health professionals, foundations, and most importantly yourself (Guest). Even though those options are there for you, you still have to find activities that suit yourself so you continue to do them to feel better. Montag and Mildred have different ways to cope with their illness but the information interprets that coping styles help individuals with their illness, and the help is there but the medical professionals need to pay attention and the individual has to want it.

Real world professionals taking advantage of patients mental illness

In Fahrenheit 451 mental health has had a major impact on Montag and Mildred and in the real world today people suffer from the same issues but are seen by medical professionals who are discrediting individuals with their illness. Studies have shown that on a daily basis there are between ten and fifteen patients that aren’t treated when they come to see medical professionals for help with their illness (Oursler). There is a myth behind mental health and mostly all the people think that the mind is ill, but our mind isn’t an object so that saying is false which makes an impact on the individual that has the illness (Reviving). The individual will then think that their mind isn’t right which then leads to them misunderstanding their illness along with the diagnosis description. All of these minor setbacks causes the patient to see a medical professional and then sometimes the individual gets told that their illness is not treatable. Multiple patients have overcome the stigma of their mental illness to come and get help, but professionals are discrediting their patients because it isn’t a major concern when the patients first come for treatment. Studies have been done to prove that adults in the U.S. with the ratio of 1:5 which includes individuals suffering from an illness, and only 40% of those patients will get treatment (Oursler). Based on the individual’s own knowledge about medical professionals not helping their patients may be a reason why they didn’t reach out to get help. “One in four families has at least one member with a mental disorder” (Investing). Family members that try to help their loved one eventually feel the stigma and when going to medical professionals for the stigma relief that they are receiving from the ill individual, professionals are saying there is nothing to do unless they stop helping. Individuals that go to seek help with their illness usually ends like this “Yet millions of people living with these conditions do not receive the care they require” (Editors). The individual doesn’t get the help that they need. Medical professionals have patients come in with mental illnesses that are curable and medications are available but these transactions for the prescriptions aren’t going through. Multiple prescriptions are available for mostly every common illness and even though patients react differently it doesn’t give the professionals the right to say that their illness isn’t important enough to receive a prescription. Patients that are going through the stigma of the illness, now have to deal with treatment not being available “... individuals suffering from a mental illness already face difficulties in receiving treatment” (Nelson). The patients with the illness that need a prescription which would cure them are forgotten about, and another study has shown that individuals have suffered from illnesses that are treatable in a year which is eighteen percent of adults in the US (Nelson). There is a very high chance that an individual's illness can be treated, but with statistics being this high in the mental health department it will eventually scare away patients because they know that their illness won’t be treated professionally. Even though the percentage of individuals suffering from treatable illnesses is increasing, multiple states since 2009 have cut their budget up to 39% for the mental health department (Editors). These statistics are proven to show that medical professionals are caring less about the mental health patients due to these actions that have been taken. The population in the U.S. is over 300 million people which seems like a ton of people but with medical professionals not treating patients, the number of mentally ill individuals are going to rise “.. and every one in 17 Americans currently has a serious mental illness” (Editors). Furthermore, the information given above proves that Montag and Mildred are not the only individuals suffering from a mental illness.
