The chapter title "The Hearth and The Salamander" has an undercover meaning partaining to the hearth, which helps make a base to start a fire, is represented by the little girl named Clarisse. She based the hearth for the fire about to begin in Mr. Montag throughout the whole chapter. This leads to the meaning of the salamander. In the book it states, "He pulled out his igniter, felt the salamander etched on its silver disc."(Bradbury, 10) This disc is an emblem that is represented by the fire station which is where Mr. Montag works to burn people who have collected books. In conclusion, the hearth and salamander are both represented by people who are about to ruin the way society is currently run by making sparks that lead to glimpse of what life used to be like before all historical books became illegal in all places.

The chapter title "The Sieve and the Sand" has a meaning referring to the mind of Montag in the text. Montag is struggling greatly after his discovery of books to retain information about them to try and prove to his boss that books are not that bad after all. The term sieve refers to his mind not being able to keep the small parts of books he is trying to memorize whereas the sand is referring to the thoughts that he cannot hold on to. A quote to support this states, "I'm numb. When did the numbness really begin in my face? In my body?" (Bradbury, 73) This correlation would be seen later on as Montag meets an old memory of a man, Faber. He helps Montag understand some parts of books and this allows Montag to hold on to the other "rocks" of info while the "sand" continues to fall through his "sieve."

The chapter title "Burning Bright" has a meaning that connects with all the hardships that Montag went through throughout the text finally lead to burning ideas and events to occur in this chapter. Montag remembers texts from the Bible as well as where he met his wife. The burning from within him floods him with emotions throughout this chapter which is the first time this had occurred in this book. Montag had stated, " One of them had to stop burning. So it looked as if it had to be Montag and the people he had worked with until a few short hours ago." This shows Montag's first burning idea that what he used to do is wrong for the well-being of society and he needed to fix it. This led to him burning away his old way of life into his new way of life trying to bring back the old ways of books and destroy the current state of his awful society.
