Which parts of your identity do you think are chosen by you, and which are shaped by society? Why?

The parts are all the things that I like and I don't, the way I relate to others and the way treat my family and friends. The parts that society choses are the way I am perceived by them, and the opportunities it grants me. The things I like or dont are chosen by me because others cant decide over my likes, those are things decided by me. In the other hand, all the opportunites that are presented to me by the society are chosen by them and the way they perceive myself is shaped by society because I cant do anything to change everybodies point of view to see me in the way I like them to see me.

In what ways can focusing on only one identity category hide important parts of a person's experience? Give an example.

I think that when you look only to a single trait of the indentity of a person you make a side all the other things that make that person who he is. For example, continuing with the subject of the morning: imagine a black football player in france. You can categorize him as only an athlete, or rich/famous person, but you are not taking into consideration all the other things that make him him and the things he has to live with day by day. He may be facing hard racism in his neighboorhood, or lives away from his family, etc.. So focusing in only one category of a person's identity may close your vision of that person.

I think that the main qualities that an activist should have to become an activist is the ability to speak in public and transmit feelings to the crowd. Braveness, that is required to be in front of thousands of people that are in that place just to hear and see what YOU say and think. The social responsibility awareness, thousands or millions of individuals are going to follow you, so you have to be really careful with the things that you transmit to them; taking into consideration that different group ages (children, adults, elderly) are going to follow you. Lastly, you need luck. Luck to be heard be the correct group of people. Luck to not be canceled by powerful people when you begin with your initiative, so in few words becoming an activist requires many qualities and action from the person to become a role model to follow.

What message do you think this U2 song is trying to share about culture, identity, or human experience? Why do you think it matters?

The song "Sunday Bloody Sunday" made by U2 expresses many feelings in my point of view; anger, pain, sadness caused by the violent conflict/massacre that occurred in Northern Ireland. Making a quick investigation about the massacre, the song reflect how cultural and political differences between Catholics and Protestants turned into a "war". The song sends a powerful message about the cost of violence and the importance of peace.

I think this message matters because it reminds us that when people focus only on the differences with other people, they can forget they shared this world, city, neighborhoods, humanity in few words. Getting this message through U2 can inspire a whole generation that tended to listen to them.

Journal 5: Globalization and Art

How do you think globalization influences the way artists from different parts of the world express their ideas and emotions?

I think globalization changes many artists work. Today, people can see art from all countries on the internet, so artists learn from other cultures that can be very far from their own culture. They mix colors, music, ideas etc... from different places. This helps them create new art that connects more with the people. So picture this, an artist goes viral in tiktok and thanks to that people from all over the world is paying attention to him, and he is making art with his own ideas but now he is trying to continue with the views so he starts changing his own style in search of the approval (likes and views) from the social media. So I think globalization goes in two ways, it makes easier for artists to express themselves and became famous but at the same time more people from other cultures can critisize your work.
