Dogs are used to characterise David Lurie's status, they more often reflect his personal, internal trials and tribulations. Dogs leave muddy footprints, and so does David. As the novel progress, David leave footprints behind, at first they are muddy. No one want to follow these footprint because they are heading in the wrong direction. Bev said, "You are going to end up as one of those sad old men who poke around in rubbish bins.", no one wants the life he has. In the end of the novel, David's footprint become less muddy and he start to care about people and animals. David said, "For himself, then. For the idea of this world in which men do not use shovels to beat corpses into a more convenient shape.". In the end of the novel David put down a dog he grew very attached to and said "Yes, I am giving him up", which can refer to himself as moving forward and making new footprints, walking towards grace rather than disgrace.

Grenade as a symbol

David Lurie identifies with the character of Byron, and in some way David admired Byron and wanted to be him. Byron is self-destructive like a grenade and in the beginning of the novel, David can also be seen as self destructive. Byron moved to Italy because, "He went to Italy to escape scandal", just like David when he moved to Grahamstown. Like a grenade David ruined his own environment and effected others negatively by his actions. David Lurie used Byron as a way of survival and the more Byron died out in his soul, the more David Lurie himself changed and he was in the process to change from disgrace to grace.

The heart surrounded by flames is a symbol for passion.

In the novel Lurie is clearly passionate about women and sex (maybe a bit too passionate to a point where he describes himself as "a slave of Eros" because of his passionate desires.

Lurie has also lost his passion for his job as a professor. Once a man who was excited about the content that he taught, Lurie now simply tolerates his profession as it pays his bills. He finds "Communications 101 to be preposterous". Furthermore, he believes his students are incapable of understanding and he has become accustomed to their "range of ignorance".

Passion as well as lack thereof is the starting point of Lurie's trajectory into disgrace and despair since his love for women and sex drove him to have an inappropriate affair with Melanie, and the lack of passion for his job lead to his boredom and kick-started his downfall.

The two reaching hands symbolize "acceptance of others."

In 'Disgrace' David Lurie struggles to accept the way others feel and think about things, he doesn't give much effort to try and understand others at first, for example, in the court case where Melanie filed a complaint against him, he didn't want anybody's help and walked away.

When it came to finding justice for his daughter, David again fell in a trap of accepting the way Lucy wants to handle the situation, but instead of becoming closer to his daughter and wanting to help her, he pushed himself even further away leaving their relationship more hurt than before.

"Because I couldn't face one of your eruptions, David, I can't run my life according to whether or not you like what I do. Not anymore. You behave as if everything I do is part of the story of your life. You are the main character, I am a minor character who doesn't make an appearance until halfway through. Well, contrary to what you think, people are not divided into major and minor." Finally Lucy decides to confront David about his way of accepting her.
