The public education system was not well organized in the south and usually had their family members as there instructors. However, those who had more money were able to buy tutors for instruction. Though in the North, it was common to have public education, although the working class only had so many benefits. And this is why hes given the nickname of "father of American public schools". Horace Mann was his name and he served as head of the state board of education in Massachusetts. He stressed to many students around the world the importance of going to public school. Mann and many more reformers saw education as a way to solve problems in society, such as crime rates and family poverty. Horace Mann persuaded the citizens of Massachachusetts to vote to pay taxes to build better schools, to pay higher salaries for teacher, and open training schools for teachers. Many citizens felt that slavery was not right to other races because they were not treated equally. Also, the citizens wanted to promote liberty and equality for all. This all started when the abolitionist movement began in the Revolutionary era, where many wanted blacks to be removed from the white society. The first result of this is the North ended slavery in the early 1800s, however there was still slavery in the South. The goal was to end slavery in the United States. He was an escaped slave who wanted to abolish slavery. He eventually became the leader of the abolitionists movement. One impact he had was creating the North Star. The North Star was an antislavery newspaper where many citizens read. In result, he had many white and black people agree, such as Sojourner Truth. Truth was also a former slave who was inspired by Douglass to speech about the evil of slavery. With all the help of everyone, the North ended slavery. It took awhile to abolish slavery from the South, but when we did it was a great accomplishment in the United States history.
