Do we design a whole space or just a small space?
This is up to you. You may choose to design a whole playground for early childhood settings
or a sensory garden, as an example. Just be mindful of the limited word count and your
need to show the depth of your understanding.
What is constructive play?
Constructive play refers to play that supports and encourages learning. It helps children to make
meaning, become confident learners, explore their environment etc. It is not referring to block or
building based play.

What do we discuss when talking about the key features of our environment?
This is the content we covered in Weeks 7 and 8, which includes things like stimulation,
engagement, flexibility, inclusivity, multiplicity, cultural diversity, developmentally appropriate
experiences, open ended experiences, multi purposeful, natural materials, individual spaces within
environments etc.

How do we cover all of this in detail with only 1000 words?

As per previous assessments, you won't be able to cover everything in sufficient detail, so you
need to make an educated decision on what is most relevant to YOUR play environment and focus
on this in depth. It is better to choose a few areas and show the depth of your understanding, than
to briefly cover many areas. QUALITY OVER QUANTITY!
Can we use headings?
Yes you can use headings and we will be flexible with the word count in regards to this (won't
penalise if the headings are what send you over).
Do we need an introduction and conclusion?
No formal overall introduction or conclusion is needed. Only the overview of your environment for each plan and a brief summary of the key
features such as age group, location and intended objectives.
Do we need to use references?
Yes, this is an academic paper and referencing according to APA is required. You should utilise in text
referencing to demonstrate your understanding of links to theory, educational documents/
frameworks, research based literature and play based approaches to learning (especially the
readings from the unit!)
What do you mean by the plans should be practical and implementable?
This means your plans need to be a little bit like a ‘how to guide’ for fellow educators should they
wish to recreate your play space. So making a classroom on the moon is not practical or
implementable (though very creative), so show consideration and restraint for things like cost and
resources and be explicit with your explanation of how and why you have designed your space this
way.
What kind of objectives should we discuss?
Your objectives should outline the purpose of your play environment - that is what do you want the
children to learn/experience whilst in this space? For example, in a reading corner you might want
the children to experience rest and relaxation, to be allowed to play calmly and quietly, to explore
concepts about print and phonemic awareness through their engagement with books etc.
Can we use our own photos/images?
Yes you can, just make sure there are no photographs of children’s faces (blur them or cover
them with an image). You do not need to reference your own drawings ( floor plan) but any other
images you use (photographs, google images etc) you will need to follow APA guidelines to
reference these.
Should our images be included as an appendix?
No, your images should be inserted throughout your presentation where relevant. So if you are
talking about the key features of aesthetics in your environment, this is where you will insert a
picture of the elements of your design that promote aesthetics. Remember this is to be presented
in a way that a fellow colleague can pick it up and re-create it, so logically and coherently
sequenced is important for ease of understanding and recreation. And we don’t want to be jumping
backwards and forwards to an appendix when marking!
Can we use bullet points?
Yes bullet points are acceptable in this assessment, but only in the overview part. Make sure that writing is still of an
academic level and flows/reads easily and professionally.
The report part should be written as any other essay in 3rd person and in full paragraphs.
Do we need to focus on the design of the environment or on the experiences in the
environment?
A little bit of both. Your folio needs to show how the use of environment can influence learning; so
how you intend for your children to interact/experience the environment is important. However it is
not simply a list of/description of the resources and materials used.
Do we need to reference the EYLF, AC & NQF?
Yes, highlighting how your play environment accommodates the views on play based learning,
outdoor learning, natural based materials, cultural diversity, inclusion etc stated in these
documents will allow you to address the complexities of play to show your ability to think and plan
critically and analytically.
Do we need to cover all points in both plans or can we have a different focus in each?
You need to show your understanding of the content through explanation of the design elements
(aesthetics, creative features, engagement, active learning, constructive play and the use of
natural materials) in both plans (as one is indoor vs outdoor and one is <5 vs >5) however
focussing on different complexities/key features in each is recommended. For example, you might focus on
inclusivity and cultural diversity for your outdoor environment and then multipurpose and flexibility
for your indoor environment.
How can I satisfy the assessment requirements for an indoor school environment when
children sit at desks to learn?
The assessment outlines play-based learning environment within the school settings. You might need to research alternative methodologies for school based learning rather than just
sticking with traditional classrooms. For example, JP classrooms in Australia are gradually moving
towards more inquiry based and explorative learning styles and therefore you could look up things
like Kathy Walker, Inquiry based learning, Reggio Emilia and Nature Play etc to get some
inspiration on how you can address the requirements and alter your view on the traditional
classroom to a play environment that promotes constructive learning.
What format is this assessment?
This assessment is a Folio format, however there are many types of Folios - and this is only
designed to be one aspect of your teaching Folio. The assessment guidelines state
that you should have an overview/ summary, a rationale, sources, 2 floor plans, a reference list.

your play environment, so you might like to re-visit the format of
report writing to get some ideas. But remember, the most important point is that you address all of
the assessment criteria and show your understanding of the learning content from the unit.
Structure is not as important in this assessment as previous assessments.
We recommend an overview of 100 words which identifies your chosen age group, floor plan, whether your
environment is indoors/outdoors, summary of the key features with the objectives of your plans and a brief summary of your space
and the approach it is based on. A rationale where you describe and discuss key aspects and features of the play environment that support children’s learning in early childhood, and how these aspects and features are reflected and will be achieved in your plan. Additional key issues you must address include:

a description and analysis of key aesthetic and creative features of the environment that invite engagement, active learning and constructive play
a description and analysis of the role of nature and natural materials.

Here you explain your chosen
area (may be just a focus area such as the book corner or could be up to 5 aspects of whole play
space e.g. the grassy hill, creek bed, tree house, meeting area and veggie patch in your nature
garden), the main points of the creative and aesthetic features and how they support engagement,
active learning and constructive play.

Can you provide an example of objectives?
The main objectives of this play space are for children to develop
appreciation and respect for the natural environment, to engage in explorative and interest based
learning and to further develop their sensory processing skills.
The Folio provides sufficient detail for educators to re-create the play environment along with a
rationale which outlines how this environment can be best utilised to promote engagement, activity
learning and constructive play in early childhood settings.
How do we submit the assessment?
The assessment should be submitted as ONE WORD or PDF DOCUMENT via Turnitin. So any images
you use, need to be contained within your document (e.g. copy and paste) not attached as an
appendix or additional files. Your choice of document presentation is up to you (word or powerpoint

In Folio, the sources are meant to encouraged you to look beyond some scholarly literature. For example, you may be inspired by the Library near your house, furniture catalogue, art museum, the primary school you attended, natural park, special beach or motel. Inspirations are everywhere. For some students, the biggest inspiration will be Forest / Bush kinders or Reggio Emilia schools and preschools.

As Deviney, Duncan, Harris, Rody, Rosenberry (2010) write "to begin to understand the principles of designing beautiful classroom spaces, you must learn to search for what inspires and excites you. Your inspiration may come from a visit to a nearby paint store. Looking at paint chips and browsing the brochures that show how colours work together might spark an idea for a new look for your classroom... Visit a home store or go to an art gallery. Spend a sunny day it the local nursery or lumberyard. Walk through a resale shop. Borrow your inspiration from anywhere... a fabric remnant, framed children's or commercial art, an authentic piece of furniture, or the beautiful textures and colour of the natural world" (p. 17).
