The infection will usually begin when the M. tuberculosis bacteria reaches the pulmonary alveoli and starts reproduction. Great internal alveolar and lung damage can occur, and the infection can possibly enter the blood stream to affect other organs and parts of the body such as the heart and skeletal muscles. Even after being cured, tuberculosis can leave scar tissue.

Before treatment, early detection and vaccination is the best way to deal with the disease. During its later stages, treatment can get tricky, and heavy doses of antibiotics will have to be used. Appropriate antibiotics can repel and even kill the invading bacteria, thereby allowing the previously infected and damaged regions to heal themselves.
