On November 16, 1938 at Ryburn Valley, England, the Slasher hysteria was born. Two women, Gertie Watts and Mary Gledhill, were making accusations on Old Blank Lane of a man in the shadows, who slashed at them with a blade; however, their stories never matched the same description of the man. Nobody knows to this day if the first case of the Slasher case was real or fake.

Some of the consequences involved police interrogations, false accusations, and groups of men roaming the streets who are doing act of vigilante work, if in their path comes along a suspicious man they will beat them up. On occasion they may find a need to beat them to death, trying to find information. Without any kind of trials convicting the vigilantes of their wrong doings they ran rampant in the streets looking people that look out of place. vigilantes had no remorse for truth around their beatings of suspicious people.

Following the first attack, paranoia and news spread of the Slasher. Five days later, Mary Sutcliffe claimed to be attacked by a man on the evening of November 21 and others following afterwards. As the Slasher paranoia reached fever pitch, the police announced that there might be three different attackers. The case became so severe that the police called in Scotland Yard. On November 29 detective chief inspector William Salisbury and Sergeant Harry Studdard arrived from London to help with the Slasher case

With the first Slasher case it started with a sharp blade, with the victims bleeding radically from their heads. The rest of the victims consisted of more sharp blades that they may have cut themselves. The report made on November 29, an elderly lady stated she cut herself as she was in a fit, with being angry she tried to cover up by stating that she was cut by the Slasher.

During the years of 1692-1693 the hysteria of The Salem Witch Trials took place. The entire madness started with a few young girls and mouths full of lies, which was all the Slasher was made of. Just like The Salem Witch Trials, the Slasher hysteria was all fake. During these hysterias there were also a lot of false accusations, including John Proctor from The Salem Witch Trials and Clifford Edwards from the Slasher hysteria.

One woman named Beatrice Sorrell confessed, "I did it myself after having a row with my boy." Other women came forward, and it was apparent that the character of the Halifax Slasher was all make believe.
