I would notice that they would write the questions and sit there. I thought they were listening to me explain how to get the answer but instead, they wanted the final answer only. I noticed that they would always ask me, what is the answer. As soon as I would tell them the answer, they would start writing. This was not completely obvious at first but one day a studnts said in the middle of my explanation, "what's the answer?" At first, I was doing notebook checks to ensure that the students were actually copying the work. But this was unrealistic to do every day since it took a lot of time to walk around the room and check each student's work. Then, I began giving them test which were opened ended and this did not work out either because the amount of time, i spent grading 120 students was unrealistic. Then, I realized that I need to start asking questions. i started with simple questions to build confidence. I have learned math by copying notes and competing exercises over and over again until I became proficient. I never thought that talking about math would be engaging and fun. All my students was needed was a way to be challenged but challenged to the point where they are intimidated or unable to complete the task. Classroom discussions are fun, it is what students love to do, talk. Also, it teaches them to listen and make connections.
