This book is divided into ten parts from March to December. Each chapter shows how each month is significantly different at Manzanar Camp. For instance, in Chapter# 7: July, they celebrated independence, and in Chapter # 9: September, they start the new school year completely different from their island. In chapter ten: December author writes that "As hot as the summer was in this prison village, winter is that cold. Winter is not wet, like on the island, and it is dry and cold." Manami and her family found out many of their friends are also in the camp. Manami's brother and sister cannot live without their mother and little sister Manami so, they come and join the camp. Even though they were provided schools and jobs in the camp, her brother said, there is "No freedom behind the barbed wires." Overall is the story of loss, healing, endurance, justice, and hope.
