This is largely due to the fact that it's becoming increasingly difficult to be self sufficient and we as a species are starting to rely a lot on artificial products. So if there was a sudden change in the world and everyone had to be self sufficient, humanity would not survive for very long, this also because we are unable to extract good like they did in the old times, not many people are able to hunt and successfully extract meat from say a deer in the wild.
