Young Americans were very fed up with the 60s. They were angry about the war in Vietnam, they were angry about segregation against Black people, and they were angry at adults, who told them the following things were okay. They wanted a change in culture that would distinct them from other people and to show their devotion to world peace. They joined the counter culture movement.

The Hippie's Style

Hippies acted very differently than other people. They wore ripped jeans and bland, faded shirts to show that they didn't care about appearance, or colorful shirts, to show their dedication to world peace. Boys grew their hair long and had beards. Girls didn't put on makeup or wear ponytails. Hippies didn't care about their appearances on the outside, especially the color of their skin. Some of them painted their bodies. They also partied, drank, and smoked marijuana. Rather than living with their real families, hippies lived in groups with other hippies. Most of all, hippies didn't care what society thought of them; they were free spirited and did what they wanted to

Hippies listened to a new kind of music; Rock n' Roll. Rock n' Roll music featured loud electric guitars, fast drum beats, and a bass guitar which added to the beat and sound of the song. Some rock songs featured lyrics that related to the problems of the 1960's. Singers/Bands, like Bob Dylan and The Beatles, sang songs about the problems of war and peace. One of the Beatles' most popular protest songs was "Revolution". Hippies liked Rock n' Roll because unlike the 1940's and 50's cheerful songs, rock n' roll actually addressed problems and hippies were able to relate to it
