I’m going to be a doctor and everybody around here better understand that!” p. 50

This quote show's beneatha's determination by showing how she did not care what no one said or who thought it was funny. She was determined to be a doctor regardless what anyone thought it didn't faze her of other's opinions. She refused to be bothered by any of the negativity towards her dream. Beneatha was determined to accomplish her dream no matter what.

Personality - Headstrong

Beneatha to Ruth : "Get over it? What are you talking about, Ruth? Listen, I'm going to be a doctor. I'm not worried about who I'm going to marry yet - if I ever get married." p. 50

How this shows how Beneatha is headstrong is because her mom and Ruth were talking to her about getting married, but it wasn't her focus. Beneatha's focus was achieving her goal, and that was becoming a doctor. So when Mama and Ruth were talking to her about getting married, Beneatha did not really pay any attention to it. She was set to wanting to accomplish becoming a doctor and helping people.

I feel as tho that Beneatha is a very good motivated person she's determined. Knowing how rough it had been for people of the same color as her, it did not stop her faith. Even though that is so, she has tendencies throughout the book to forget that her family members are the ones that help put her in school and become educated. Beneatha all-in-all is all about finding ways to express herself while being a kind, and generous woman persistent to be a doctor.

4-5 sentences

The paining takes good use of the colors in the visible light spectrum. This painting is of a man looking in the sky, and he seems to have a rainbow view, but outside of his view is a storm. What I think the art is trying to convey is that although you may be surrounded by negativity and problematic things, you got to see a positive view in a situation no matter what it is. Even though the man is seeing a stormy sky, he still is seeing the storm positively which is the reason for the rainbow and light.

Ideals by Helen Steiner Rice

Remember that ideals
are like stars up in the sky,
You can never really reach them,
hanging in the heavens high …
But like the mighty mariner
who sailed the storm-tossed sea,
And used the stars to chart his course
with skill and certainty,
You too can chart your course in life
with high ideals and love,
For high ideals are like the stars
that light the sky above …
You cannot ever reach them,
but lift your heart up high
And your life will be as shining
as the stars up in the sky.

An ideal is something that is looked at as perfect or is the perfect example to become in life. This poem is about having something that you want and the reality of pursuing something. In Lines 1-4 it says, "Remember that Ideals are like stars in the sky, You can never really reach them, hanging in the heavens high... ." The meaning of those lines is really saying that Ideals or things that people want to pursue are not just easy to achieve like "stars in the sky" as the poem had said. Beneatha's brother, Walter, doubted her and her dreams of becoming a doctor because of the way they were treated during the time. In Lines 13-16 it says, "For high ideals are like the stars that light the sky above …You cannot ever reach them, but lift your heart up high." Those lines describe the difficulty of reaching or accomplishing an ideal, but even though Beneatha was being doubted, she still pursued her dream.

Theme : Dreams vs. Reality

Quote : Walter to Travis: “Just tell me where you want to go to school and you’ll go. Just tell me, what it is you want to be—and you’ll be it…Whatever you want to be—Yessir! You just name it, son… and I hand you the world!” p. 108

How does it supports the theme?
During this quote, Walter had finally got the money to open a liquor business. Walter throughout the novel felt like his dream was being slept on. He even felt that Beneatha's dream of being a doctor was being more supported than his dream. When Walter lost hope after his mother spent the money she received on a new house for her family, he had gotten a surprise. Mama had put money aside for Walter to pursue his dream because she realized how down and low-spirited he felt. After getting the money Walter talked to his son Travis about how bright his future is going to be because of the liquor business that he wants to make happen which shows how determined that Walter had been to become successful by achieving his dream. Even though he lost hope, he gained it right back and it made him more persistent to achieve it when he felt like someone was investing in his dream and making it into a reality.
