Secession first started when the South thought that they had their own right to be an independent country and to preserve the institution of slavery. But North and some others disagreed with the south and thought they would be better off together with north and that slavery should minimize and point to other factors such as taxation.

Though there are some that think secession is a good idea there are mostly overshadowed by the people and their reasons as to why it's a bad idea. People such as James Buchanan, he argues the principle of secession is inconsistent with the “Federal Constitution”, because it would have made the labors of those who developed the Constitution in vain if States could secede at will.

The secessionists claimed that according to the Constitution every state had the right to leave the Union. Lincoln claimed that they did not have that right. He opposed secession for these reasons: 1. Physically the states cannot separate. 2. Secession is unlawful. 3. A government that allows secession will disintegrate into anarchy. 4. That Americans are not enemies, but friends. 5. Secession would destroy the world's only existing democracy, and prove for all time, to future Americans and to the world, that a government of the people cannot survive.

It's not just the Presidents that would like to support their reasons on why sucession is a bad thing, a writer named John Havart II talked about his reason as well as from this quote "I take issue with secession for several reasons. The first is because I do not think it will resolve the problem. I am only too willing to admit that the federal government inside the beltway leaves much to be desired. However, our federal legislators come from the states."

Another reaso is the fact that our American states are not nations. Any declaration of secession would be artificial. A nation like ours is not a corporate conglomerate that can spin off companies at will. A nation is formed organically when a collection of social units coalesces into a clearly distinctive whole.

Like said before there are people who think secession is a good thing and there reasons aren't necessarily wrong like for instance we would need secession if When the governing constitution or other document provides for it; or

When the state wishing to secede does so with the assent of both its own citizens and the citizens of the remaining nation; or

When the national majority is presently oppressing the citizens of the seceding state, the people of the seceding state have tried all other political and judicial avenues of redress, and there is no more moral avenue open to them; and, in all cases

When the seceding state respects the rights and obligations of all concerned and seeks to negotiate a fair settlement of claims and a peaceful withdrawal
