I Am Number Four is a novel by the author Pittacus Lore, and is part of the Science Fiction genre. The novel centers around a teenage alien boy named John, who is being hunted by an evil alien race, the Mogadorians, that destroyed his home planet, Lorien. With the help of his protector, Henri, John learns to develop the amazing powers that he and eight other children from Lorien obtain. He falls in love along the way, with a girl named Sarah Hart who eventually discovers he is an alien when he saves her from a house fire. She accepts him for who he is, as does his best friend/ alien fanatic, Sam Goode. Together, they all try to figure out what exactly John's abilities are, and how he can hopefully one day defeat the Mogadorians.

I would give this novel five stars out of five, and highly recommend this book to anyone of any age. The plot is well developed, following a teenage boy that, even though he is not like us, we can all relate to. The characters are easy to love, from the perfect Sarah Hart, to the sweet and nerdy Sam Goode. This book is great for anyone who loves adventure and suspense novels. There are many twists and turns, and even evokes some deep emotions. This is by far a ten out of ten book.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/6f/I_Am_Number_Four_Cover.jpg

The writer of the review from Commonsensemedia.org describes the novel as a "well blended mish-mash of genres" (Wheadon). She describes the characters as heroic and loyal, explaining that they are good role models for younger readers. The Setting is an easy going small town that easy to love and settle down in. The author does mention that some characters, such as Sarah, lose their depth as the novel goes on. She also mentions that the gory death at the end may be too much for some younger readers to handle.
https://www.commonsensemedia.org/book-reviews/i-am-number-four

I agree with basically every point of the review. I made the same observation that Sarah's easy acceptance of John being an alien caused her character to lose depth. The same thing goes with Mark Jame's character, who suddenly had a miraculous change of heart and accepted John's secret. I also agree that the setting and characters are easy to fall in love with, and the bond between John and Henri resonates with anyone who has a father figure in their life. The rating of the book from the review was four stars out of five and I think that is a pretty accurate rating.

Element #3: Universal Theme

The universal theme that is present in the novel would be that family is more than just blood. I the novel, John's entire blood family has been eliminated by the Mogadorians. However, he finds family in Henri, his protector. While they shared no DNA, Henri was John's legal father on earth, and in the real father in Johns heart. At Henri's funeral, John says, "I know we always joked about it, but you were my father. The best father I could ever have" (Lore 437). This is the universal theme that people can relate to from the novel.

The reason this is an obvious universal theme in the world today is because everyone has a family. Even people without any blood relatives have people that love and care for them. That is all that constitutes a family. John and Henri were not blood related, yet they were still a family that every reader can relate to. Traditional family of brothers and sisters and mom and dad is not what everyone around the world gets to experience. So the theme of family being solely built of the people who care about you is a theme that everyone in the world can relate to.

Element #4: Character Analysis

Sam Goode is John's best friend throughout the novel. He is obsessed with aliens and everything extraterrestrial, but his love for sci-fi stems from something deeper than just the fantasy of it. Sam is motivated to discover what happened to his father after one day he simply just disappeared. Sam's conclusion: his father was abducted by aliens. Sam says, "I know you are going to think I'm totally psycho, but I think my dad was abducted by aliens, and that's why he left" (Lore 223). This, along with his friendship for John, is what motivated Sam throughout the book to protect the people that he loves from the Mogadorian invasion.

Sam has traits that anyone would love to have. He is kind and smart, a little on the nerdy side, but lovable and funny. He is loyal, because he spent his whole life hating aliens, but when he discovers that his best friend is one, he immediately forgets his hatred and sticks by John's side. John describes Sam by saying, "You're a good dude, Sam Goode. Don't let anyone tell you different" (Lore 135). Sam is a good kid who is loyal, smart, and easy to love.

I can relate to Sam's character in many ways. Sam is desperately searching for something to believe in, something to hope for. I feel that I, along with many other teenagers relate to this want for something to discover. I do not relate to Sam's hatred for aliens or love for finding them. I also can not personally relate to how Sam is the target of Mark James and his friend. Overall though, I can relate to the shy and smart kid that Sam is, and I see why the characters in the book want to be his friend.

https://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/thelorienlegacies/images/2/20/Sam.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20140421073322
