Along the way the pioneers faced many hardships that they had to over come. One thing that many people didn't fear was falling off the wagon, but if this happens it could be dangerous. If you fell from the cabin from the front you could be crushed by over two thousand pounds of force by getting crushed by the wheel. In addition to that, not everyone knew how to swim and this could be dangerous. Adults could sometimes drown in rivers while crossing because they did not properly learn how to swim, now imagine what the kids had to go through. Another wide spread hardship that could be passed on from wagon to wagon is disease. If a disease struck your wagon it could spread and effect everyone in that wagon. This could result in entire wagons being wiped out in a single day. Weather, was also a huge issue. If a big thunderstorm hit there was not much you could do because you don't have the proper shelter that would be needed to protect you from that storm. People sometimes got struck by lighting because they had no were to stay. Finally, if settlers did not choose the right time to leave it could result in an overall disaster. If a family decided to leave too early the grass would not be fully grown and the oxen wouldn't have anything to eat. If this happens there is nothing that can pull your heavy wagon and people could get stranded.

No matter how careful people were on the Oregon Trail, accidents happened. Sometimes, children and adults would fall from the wagon, and were crushed beneath the wheels. Another hardship was getting sick. People got sick from drinking bad water or milk from cows that ate poisonous weeds. Most people who died during the trip became ill from diseases, which at the time didn't have a cure. These diseases include: Typhoid, Mountain Fever, Dysentery, Cholera, Flu, Measles, and Smallpox. Also, a hardship was drowning. People would sometimes drown trying to swim across the rivers along the way. Overall, getting the the end of the Oregon Trail was very rare, and not many people survived the journey.

The Donner party originated from Springfield Illinois and was made up of 87 people that rode in 23 wagons. They left to try and make it to California but they wanted to get their the fastest way possible by taking a shortcut created by a man named Lansford Hastings who already has made the journey to California and wanted to possibly become the president by trying to find a shortcut to help the people move to California. Once the Donner decided to take this route and go off the beaten trail, they ran into some trouble as they spent days trekking though the different areas along Hasting's trail and they lost many valuable items including the deaths of their oxen and cows. After being stranded there they ended up resulting to eating the bodies of their party after they'd died from exposure. Slowly as time went on, more and more party members died, and there bodies were being eaten, rescue starting to come and picked them up in small groups. Only about half of the party (48 out of 87) survived and made it to California.

Boomtowns helped miners during the gold rush have a place to stay. They were often found near rutted wagons or free-flowing streams. After all the easily found gold was gone most boomtowns actually disappeared. Also, the largest towns for boomtowns were Sacramento and Stockton, but the greatest boomtown of all was San Francisco. It went from having 600 in 1848 to 25,000 in 1849. Lastly, One of the famous boomtowns was called Dyea.

This is a picture of one the most famous and biggest boomtowns in San Francisco.

The most common weapon used was the .69 caliber smooth bore flintlock musket. The musket can hit a target from a 100 feet away witch made these guns the best possible to use. But there were some pistols used but more long guns and they weren't really used as secondaries. Most secondaries are knifes mostly everyone carried a knife during the wars it was one of the most used weapons but not one of the powerful ones. One of the more powerful weapons was the cannon. The cannon was used to hold off the other team to hold there position. This is what weapons soldiers used in wars.

Boom towns were towns that popped up practically overnight when many people from all of the world traveled to California for the California gold rush. As a result of how quickly the boom towns were created, there was a lack of law enforcement. Vigilante committees were formed and they acted as important officials. Women also played a big role in boom towns. They set up shops and restaurants to feed and cloth the miners. Boom towns were busy and lively places filled with diverse people. Life in boom towns were harsh and rushed. People were constantly working and moving around to get a profit for themselves. Some boom towns were only around for a couple days while others were there for weeks or months. After people left the boom towns when all the gold and silver was mined, the town then became a boom town. San Francisco was one of the very few boom towns that didn't turn into a ghost town and went on to become a city.

The Native Americans of the Lone Star Republic Never really had official tribe names due to the fact that there were different countries settling in the state at the same time. Speaking of the settlers, the Spanish and the Europeans traded guns and horses for the fur of animals like coyotes. With these horses and guns they would ride in the planes to hunt buffalo and use literally everything they could, using bones for arrowheads and shafts, eating the meat and tanning the hide. The settlers not only brought along guns and horses but less helpful things like cholera and smallpox. The diseases wiped out nearly 95% of the Texas native american population. With disease came the people who tried to convert natives to Christians, which would barely work

When America bought a set of these revolvers they started using these more often because they were easy to use. The traditional gun used was the .69 caliber smoothbore flintlock because it was easy for people to get there hands on them. The Mexicans used out of date weapons and cannons because they were broke at the time and took whatever Europe did not want. A mutual weapon between the two were swords because they were sharp and if you did not have a gun they would rely on swords. The Mexican's disadvantage was so big That it cost them the battle over the cannon they tried seizing.

There were two types of American military soldiers. There were infantry and dragoons. The infantry is described as the backbone of the military. They were equipped with a .69 Caliber Smoothborne Flintlock musket, bayonets, knives, and any additional knives/tools. Dragoons rode on horseback and were equipped a saber, two flintlock pistols (1819 S. North Model and a 1836 Johnson Model), along with one .58 US Model 1833 Hall Carbine Rifle. Despite the strength of the soldiers we had one weapon more powerful than all of them. Our artillery was the greatest help in winning the war. We used cannonballs, shells, and canisters which all fired 300 yards at max. The Mexican forces had very similar weapons, but were not nearly as high tech or as powerful. They primarily used swords, tomahawks, Bowie knives, muskets and pistols. Their cavalry also used lances and were very effective against infantry.

Animals on the Oregon Trail

During their journey westward, the pioneers had many dangerous encounters with the wildlife. If disturbed, bears and packs of wolves would occasionally use the pioneers as an opportunity for a meal. Yet, the ever-popular rattlesnake was quite passive, but somewhat recent media has made it seem that the animals were a threat to the pioneers. The settlers would also hunt animals for food, but the meat would spoil quickly, making it literal dead weight. Despite the aforementioned hardships, the pioneers wouldn't die because of their animal encounters, they would instead lose food and supplies, and die from that.

The Immigration of the Chinese to the West

The gold rush caused many things to occur, like how jeans became jeans and how California became a state within two years of being bought by the US, but there other things that occurred as well. Such as how because of the attractive stories of fortunes and gold being found in California, merchants from all over the world began to travel there, mainly Chinese merchants. And that possibly explains why the Chinese and Asian population in general is so large in California. This is because between the years of 1849 and 1876 over 150,000 Chinese had immigrated to the states, 116,000 of which lived in California.

The Donner Party

The Donner party started off on the Oregon trail way too late and moved too slow to get to Oregon in time. They decided to take an untested shortcut which added on a month to their journey. After getting stuck in the winter, they resorted to cannibalism. Members of the group would draw lots to see who would be eaten first, or more commonly started duels to the death, eating the loser. Only few survived to go back to Oregon, and they sent back a search party. The search party also ran out of food and ate the frozen corpses of previous members. Overall, only 45/83 people survived/weren't eaten, most of which were children, and only two out of the dozens of families that went survived without a single death, the Breen family and the Reed family.

Weapons During the Mexican War.

During the Mexican war each side had different weapons. The American weapons were much better in accuracy and efficiency compared to the Mexican weapons. The standard U.S firearm was the .6 caliber smooth bore flintlock. The reason the Mexicans weapons were less efficient was because they bought their guns instead of making them themselves. Due to this they always had the wrongly sized ammo making the guns inaccurate. During the war the Mexicans had more troops but their cannons were so out of date and so much worse than the american cannons. In both armies the most important part of it was the infantry carrying a variety of weapons.

American rifle from 1820's-1850's.

The first thing that I learned was that at 4 am there is a bugler that blows a trumpet or a rifle is fired by the night guard to wake up everyone. Then, at 5 am cattle were rounded up after being aloud to graze the night, 5:30 am woman would make breakfast, its usually bacon, pancakes, or corn porridge. After that, at 6:30 am men would take down the tents and put them away. During "noon time" people would take a break and usually ate something. Finally I learned that the most common threats were, exhaustion, disease, and crossing rivers.

The Donner Party was a group of westbound emigrants who unfortunately got trapped in the Sierra Mountains during one of the most brutal winters. They were forced to live in the Sierra Mountains for the next 5 months in makeshift tents with almost no supplies. The party used up all of their food within 3 weeks, they ate whatever they could. They'd eat leaves, dirt, or even twigs. Then a party member suggested, if one dies could more survive? Two of the group members were found exhausted and lying in the snow, so William Foster shot both in the head. But not all the members engaged in cannibalism, those people slaughtered their pack animals. The Donner Party was not rescued until early 1847, but nearly half of them had already perished.

The Donner Party as we call it today has been given the title of an ingrained taboo in history, from running out of supplies, then to eating their fellow members. As they left Springfield, Illinois with 89 emigrants, as they were on the trail following everyone else on of the leaders read a pamphlet that said that there was a short cut the shaves of hundreds and hundreds of miles off their journey. They decided to take the ''short cut'' , they immediately got lost and decided to camp for the night. A snow storm came rolling in that night(October 28)and left them there with 5 ft. of snow for them to complete their journey. They decided to stay because they didn't want to break an axle or a wheel and not be able to replace it. As the days rolled by and resources got low they started to eat bark off of the trees, twigs, dead leaves, and their oxen. But soon after the resources became scarce one of the members decided if one person gives up their life for the sake of the group, we all might life another week. But for the size of that party one person want enough, soon many people were gone to the point where 45 people out of the 89 made it to the Oregon territory.
