Week: 01 (1.7.2021)

 

In the first week, I learned the knowledge basics of Augmented Reality, a program interactive experience of a real-world environment where the objects that reside in the real world are enhanced by computer-generated perceptual information, sometimes across multiple sensory modalities, including visual, auditory, haptic, somatosensory and olfactory. Under the umbrella term extended reality (XR), AR differs from virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR).In AR, it designs for digital elements to appear over real-world views, sometimes with limited interactivity between them, often via smartphones like Nintendo's Pokémon Go App, L'Oréal Makeup App, and others. In VR it designs immersive experiences that isolate users from the real world, typically via headset devices. Examples include PSVR for gaming, Oculus, and Google Cardboard, where users can explore, e.g., Stonehenge using headset-mounted smartphones. Lastly, MR is designed to combine AR and VR elements so digital objects can interact with the real world; therefore, you design elements that are anchored to a real environment. Examples include Magic Leap and HoloLens, which users can use, e.g., to learn more directly how to fix items. Also in the first week, I initiate an action by set up and ready to dive into the course, including downloading and setting up the required tools to complete the course.

 

Under the umbrella term extended reality (XR), AR differs from virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR). So under my context of a project, augment is to make something greater in size or value. In Augmented Reality, reality is augmented by adding digital elements like filters (when taking photos) and game characters (like in Pokemon Go). In simple words, AR is a combination of real and virtual worlds captured with the camera (lens).

 

I am so excited when I started learning something about technology since it is completely a new thing for me and very different for me. I would never be interested in learning technology but EP has pushed me to learn a piece of new knowledge. I hope that when I finish this course I would be able to develop my filter that can be as personal and others use.

 

Keep learning and get the theory part first and start applying it. 

 

One problem that I had during this elective posting is laptop speed. Since the laptop is old and worn out it is just slow. So what I did was patiently wait and carry out an initiative to use multiple devices. It takes more time, but I manage to do my elective posting.

Next week, I will start by going through the basics such as the Lens Studio dashboard, lens vs. filter, and an overview of built-in templates in this course.

Week : 1 (1/7/2021-7/7/2021)

 

On the first week of my elective posting, I managed to gain knowledge on the introduction of intellectual property. The very first session was conducted via Zoom, which happened to be the most feasible way amidst of the Covid-19 pandemic. I have got to meet and greet some experts too throughout the sessions. Indeed, previously I have always been wondering on how ideas and inventions are being protected or secured from being stolen by other parties. After joining the sessions on week 1, I have obtained some fundamental ideas and answers. This can be done by securing one or more of the four different types of intellectual property (IP) protection/rights. Intellectual property rights are exclusionary rights given to authors, inventors, and businesses for their literary and artistic works of authorship, useful and ornamental inventions, and valuable information. This consists of patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets. All of these functions differently, which I will be venturing deeper on upcoming weeks of lesson. Despite having a final exam during that week, I managed to squeeze in and worked on the presentation assigned by my supervisor.

 

 

It was very exhilarating to be able to learn new things apart from medical related courses. I was overwhelmed to have learnt that even the smallest creation and idea can be protected by law from being stolen.

 

Since the first week of this posting was all about the introduction and presentation, I managed to learn pretty much on the surface as a whole, in which I can share with my friends especially those who run businesses. I managed to brush up my presentation skills too.

 

5. Difficulties/ Concerns? And how did I cope?
As of now, there is not much of concerns, except
that it is a new thing for me and all sessions are done via online platform in
which I think it limits the exposure gained compared to phycisally attend the
company see how they run.

Next week, I will be venturing deeper on the first two of the IP rights, which are patents and trademarks. After the sharing session by my supervisor, I will then do some readings on the topics and come up with presentation.

2. What have you done?

 On the first week of my elective posting, I did research to gain more understanding about Scratch programming. I understood that Scratch is very suitable for beginners to learn about programming concepts. We can use Scratch to create interactive stories, games, arts, stimulation and more. I also attended online Lecture 1: Sprites and 2: Scratch Function that helped me to have ideas on Scratch. Besides, I completed project 1 and 2.

3. Points to remember from week 1!

-Specific terms are used in Scratch programming, character in the program is known as “sprite” , the screen is known as “stage”.

-We can determine what we want the sprites to do such as the direction, location, costume, sound and their action.

-To determine the location of sprite, look at the (x,y) coordinate.

-Function is defined as some blocks that are able to perform some task.

-Script is the combination of (stacks of) blocks. It runs from top to the bottom.

 

4. Your feelings & thoughts 

-I was super excited as I got to learn new things. I also need some time to understand and explore the Scratch website as I was completely new to it. Anyway, it felt super great to finally step out from my comfort zone and learn something that was completely new to me!

 

5. 1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

Keep learning and give myself more time to handle this skill. Be patience.

 

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

The pace of the lectures given were quite fast and I don’t really understand in the first time. However, I managed to cope it by repeat watching the videos and jotting down notes.

Next week, I will be attending lectures 3 & 4 and trying to finish the projects given after every lecture.

WHAT HAVE I DONE?
Since I am focusing on creating website, I try to understand what coding is and what kind of coding languages that can aid me in achieving my objectives. To do so, I looked through credible sources such as Codecademy, Udemy, Khan academies, and YouTube videos to truly understand these languages. 

I've decided to primarily use Codecademy because the syllabus is more well-structured and simple to understand. This week has taught me that there are three languages needed to create dynamic and functional websites: HTML as the foundation, CSS for style, and JavaScript for functionality.

I've been using Notion to keep track of my own performance including keeping all the notes that I have taken for this one week. 

FEELINGS & THOUGHTS
It's fascinating to me to be able to recognize coding now, as opposed to when I first started. I am looking at the website from a new perspective. However, to be honest, I understand what I have learned but to put that knowledge into practice may be a little bit tough for me at the moment since it is only the first week.

I believed that perseverance is required, as is the willingness to accept all challenges as a new learning opportunity.

ONE GOOD THING FROM WHAT I DID FOR FUTURE PRACTICE
As of now, there is not much knowledge I can utilize that able to help me in the future but I'm looking forward to the next three weeks.

ANY DIFFICULTIES/ CONCERNS? HOW DID I COPE?
It is unquestionably difficult to remember new coding elements. I'm sure I won't be able to recall everything by heart by the end of the project, but I'll do my best to keep track of everything by taking my own notes.

2. What have you done?
For the first week, I went through my course materials first and identified the main developing websites I'll be using.For my course, I will be using Unity and Photoshop hence before starting the lectures for the week I downloaded these websites and explored their options to make myself more familiar. Once this was done, I proceeded to view the lectures for this week which covered the basic concept of colors, usage of photoshop, and how to create a pixel treasure chest in photoshop for a pirate-themed pixel game. Furthermore, I was assigned to create a barrel based on the lessons as this week's test.

 

3. Points to remember from week 1!
- Terms in the pixel art design such as asset, pack
- How to navigate photoshop and measurements for a pixel art
- Ensure a proper color scheme is decided and make sure color is suitable to the concept
 

 4. Your feelings & thoughts 
I was very excited when I looked at the course structure and watching the lectures while practicing the steps in designing the pixel art was interesting. I got to finally see how a character is brought to life and how much effort is put to bring out intricate details in a pixel character. As much as I was excited, it was equally overwhelming as well since this was the first time I had ventured into design and the number of options available in Photoshop and Unity but due to Coursera providing a step tp step guide it was fairly easy to navigate my way through after some clicking around.

 

5. 1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

Creating my own pixel characters which can be used as stickers as well 

 

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

It was difficult to come up with my own barrel design for the assignment. It was fairly easy to just follow their steps but when I have to come up with my own design and color scheme, it became a little nerve-wracking. I researched a little on the internet on how barrels look in other games and used them as an inspiration. After a few sketches,I managed to come up with a design that I really liked.

8. Your plan for next week (Week 2)

For Week 2, I have planned to attend lectures that have been scheduled and learn how to create pixel backgrounds for a video game.

2. What have you done ?

   For our very first class, our teacher did an ice-breaking session for all of us to get to know each other better by introducing our names in Korean language. We were presented with PowerPoint slides containing a few incomplete Korean sentences in which we were then needed to fill in those blanks with our own names by reading the whole of it out loud.

   We then moved onto the very basic Korean 24 alphabet letters, the Hangul. It consists of vowels and consonants, just like English. I learnt the idea that in writing Korean sentences correctly, they were written from top to bottom, instead of the regular left-to-right direction owing to the window-box rules.

   Finishing through the Hangul, we then proceed to learn the Batchim rules, also known as the ‘third letter’ rules. As the name implies, the Batchim is the last (third) consonant letter that is placed in every sentence to finish it with special pronunciation properties to be applied. Again, the Batchim has its own rules that must be met if present in a word.

3. Key points from week 1

   -Have to remember all Korean alphabets and how to pronounce them during conversation

   -Have to master the very foundation on how to bridge Hangul alphabet letters to another with respect to Batchim letters and applying pronunciation rules.

4. Your thoughts and feelings

   The rewards, the feelings once to be able to understand a whole-new, third language are great even though I am still on level 1. I can start embracing the art of the language, how the grammar works and the outcome it yields when speaking. It keeps motivating me to learn and discover more and more in depth.

5. One good thing from what I did for future practice 

Every moment, every time the teacher will always remind us students to never stop revising learning materials from the class during our leisure time. “Practice makes perfect”, so practicing to converse in Korean over and over is good to ensure that I can memorize what I have learnt throughout the first lesson and to not forget it over time.

6. Any difficulties / concerns 

Honestly, it was quite hard to grasp the lesson in one-go during the first class. But, as time goes by, by revising one can possibly comprehend the idea behind it slowly. Keep sticking to the grammar book and there will be a breakthrough to it.
