Pearl Harbor was the main base for the U.S.'s Pacific Fleet. 
The attack was planned by Admiral Yamamoto Isoroku, in order to destroy the U.S. Fleet and gain control of the South Pacific.
In the attack the Japanese forces damaged and sunk 8 battle ships, 300 aircraft and killed 2,400 sailors. Kerouac decided to join the military in 1943 to fight for his country in World War II. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines, but was honorably discharged after only 10 days of service for "strong schizoid trends."
In the late 1940s he took several cross-country road trips to Chicago, Los Angeles, Denver, and Mexico City, with his friend Neal Cassady. On the Road is a fictionalized account of these road trips. He wrote the entire novel over one three-weeks on a single scroll of paper that was 120 feet long. kerouac called this style of writing "spontaneous prose" and inspired by the improvisation of his favorite jazz musicians.
