The Pearl Harbor Attack was a surprise aerial attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor on Oahu Island, Hawaii, by the Japanese that precipitated the entry of the United states into World War II.
Pearl Harbor was the main base for the U.S.'s Pacific Fleet.
The attack was planned by Admiral Yamamoto Isoroku, in order to destroy the U.S. Fleet and gain control of the South Pacific.
In the attack the Japanese forces damaged and sunk 8 battle ships, 300 aircraft and killed 2,400 sailors. But they didn't achieve their goal of completely destroying the base and so the battle for the pacific continued after the U.S. entered the war.

Jack Kerouac (1922 - 1969)

Jack Kerouac was an American writer best known for the novel On the Road, which became an American classic, that defined the Beat Generation.
Kerouac decided to join the military in 1943 to fight for his country in World War II. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines, but was honorably discharged after only 10 days of service for "strong schizoid trends."
In the late 1940s he took several cross-country road trips to Chicago, Los Angeles, Denver, and Mexico City, with his friend Neal Cassady. On the Road is a fictionalized account of these road trips. He wrote the entire novel over one three-weeks on a single scroll of paper that was 120 feet long. kerouac called this style of writing "spontaneous prose" and inspired by the improvisation of his favorite jazz musicians. He believed that revision was similar to lying and detracted from the ability of writing to capture the truth of a moment.
