The opioid crisis in America is at an all time high. More than 115 people die every day after overdosing on opioids. It is getting easier and easier to get access to any kind of opioid such as painkillers or heroin on the streets. Many people who become addicted are either left to die or are sent to rehab facilities. Most rehab facilities are not treating the root causes of addiction. Only some rehab centers offer a program called dual diagnosis. Dual Diagnosis gets to the root problem of someones addiction and it also treats the addiction. Most people who are addicts have some type of mental illness associated with them and this could be why they are addicted.

Interviews

My first interview was with my aunt who is a school counselor in Virginia and she deals with kids who come from broken homes. She said that most of her kids come from homes where their parents or guardians battle some sort of drug addiction along with a mental illness. She sees a lot of these kids also are using some sort of drug and have some sort of mental illness. Some of her students parents have been through rehab and they still have a problem with drugs. She thinks that rehab centers should be treating both the mental illness and the addiction side by side. For my second interview I was able to contact a rehab center that treats patients using dual diagnosis. They said that their success rate is about 30% higher than other rehab facilities that don't treat both mental health and addiction.

For my project I will be posting or handing out fliers that have information about the current opioid crisis in America. There will also be rehab centers listed that are near or around our area that treat mental illness and addiction hand in hand as well as information on clinics near them. I will be giving these fliers to my aunt and she will put them in her office and around her school .

Laws and Legislation

I couldn't find any laws or bills specifically dealing with dual diagnosis. However, there is a bill in place right now that is trying to make it easier for more people to afford rehab. Free clinics are also being set up around the country so that more people can get the help that they need.

Better access to rehab facilities

I also focused in on how treatment can be more readily available for people who cannot afford rehab facilities. The cost of rehab facilities generally range from about $12,000 -$60,000 depending on what type of program is needed. Even though you can pay in installments, the cost is too expensive for the below average American. Many people, not all, who suffer from addiction come from lower middle class to poverty type homes. I found that more clinics are being set up across the country to take in people off of the streets and get them the help that they need.
