Why use Geogebra in your classroom? A pedagogical rationale.

Geogebra provides a powerful alternate model for students to expand mathematical concepts and understanding. Hwang and Hu (2013) showed that using multiple representations to explain concepts will give students a deeper understanding of mathematics, especially when it involves collaborative learning.

There are various pedagogical advantages to using Geogebra, including:

Dialogic teaching by using Geogebra as extra evidence for class conjecture.

Pre-programmed Geogebra worksheets can be generated for students to practice at home.

Inquiry based learning by using Geogebra to investigate connections between mathematical concepts.

A tool for formative assessment.

Collaborative investigation by students sharing their understanding with a partner.

However, the teacher can only make effective use of Geogebra with a certain degree of TPCK (technological pedagogical content knowledge). If a teacher places focus solely on the pedagogical and technological aspects of the activity, the student might focus more on the software than the mathematics (AACTE, 2008). This would lead to an engaged classroom, however it would not allow for students to achieve the learning objectives for the lesson.

Furthermore, introducing Geogebra into the classroom is supported by the Melbourne Declaration on Goals for Young Australians (2008), in which it is stated that students need to become "creative and productive users of technology, especially ICT, as a foundation for success in all learning areas" (p. 8). Indeed, Geogebra doesn't simply aid in the teaching of mathematics, the logic used to solve problems is heavily rooted in concepts of computational thinking, as it facilitates creation of "solutions using a series of ordered steps (or algorithms)" (Google, n.d, para. 2). Computational thinking isn't just a powerful tool for students, it is also a skill taught in the Digital Technologies stream of the Victorian curriculum (VCAA, n.d.), and as such addressing it in the math classroom allows for cross-curriculum connections to be made.

How to use Geogebra? Some ideas.

Below are a list of ideas for using Geogebra in a secondary Math classroom:

Teacher demonstrations of geometry/algebra concepts on Geogebra in front of students for clearer and more convenient way of explanations.

Give students designed worksheets on Geogebra to allow students to individually explore relevant concepts in further detail.

Use designed worksheets on Geogebra so that students can practice in a more efficient and easy-to-understand ways.

Ask students to create their own worksheets on Geogebra to further develop their understanding, strengthen their abilities in desired areas, and share with their peers for further revision.

Use Geogebra to better explain complicated concepts to students who are finding the material challenging, by having them interact and alter variables in ways not possible with pen and paper.

Take a flipped classroom approach and record videos explaining how to create create geometric functions in Geogebra and have students watch these before coming to class. The lesson can then be dedicated to exploring these functions further, and drawing on the student's knowledge of the software to problem solve.

So that students better understand geometric proofs, the software can be used to build certain shapes (i.e. using two circles to draw an ellipse). Students can then alter values of equations to see what happens to the shape, and better understand the general formulae.

When students don't have a graphics calculator yet (i.e. in the younger years), Geogebra can be used as a free alternative with similar capabilities.

Instead of using a test for an assessment task, have students create a series of mathematical problems and solutions within Geogebra to apply their knowledge. Students can also model data within the software, so a research task wherein students have to create a formula and model it could also be done.
