Amina is a pakistani- American. Amina starts school and faces many changes. Her best friend Soojin is acting differently, her older brother Mustafa is having a hard time staying out of trouble, and her uncle is coming to visit them from Pakistan. Amina loves music. She has a beautiful voice. She struggled to speak up for her and she was too shy to perform in front of others.

Exposition and Conflict

Amina's best friend Soojin is Korean American and is excited to get her citizenship and adopt a new western name. Amina is surprised that soojin would want to give up her name. Soojin has also been friendly with Emily.

Rising Action:

The parents of Amina want her and her brother to compete in a Quran reciting event at their mosque. She is so scared of singing in front of people that she won't do a solo in her school's show.
Also, her friendship with Soojin falls apart because she is jealous of Emily.
And worst of all, Amina hears her uncle telling her father that she shouldn't sing or play music because it is forbidden and that she should instead study the Quran.

Falling Action:

• Amina's parents encourage her to play the piano for everyone gathered in their house. It brings comfort to everyone in this hard time they're going through together. Everyone in the room enjoyed it including Thaya Jaan.

•Amina resolves her problem with Soojin and Emily.

•Emily's father offers to help, he owns a construction company and offers to help rebuild.

• Soonjin's church helps hold a fundraiser for the mosque and the recitation competition. Mustafa wins the competition!

Resolution:

Amina was able to gain the confidence that she needed through her community and be successful at the Quran recitation competition that she was stressing about with her brother. Amina also finally decided to perform the solo for her school's concert. The teacher is stunned by the decision that she made to sing a solo. She looked out into the audience and saw her family's faces and how happy they were with her performance as she was up on stage. Amina was very surprised herself but she was also very happy that she had finally done it.

Climax

Suddenly, Amina's family receives an unexpected phone call, delivering the tragic news that their mosque has been vandalized as an act of hate. All the sacred things and the room prayer have been destroyed. Messages like "Terrorists" and "Go home" were left behind, among many other horrible things. The Islamic community felt bewildered and devastated by these acts of hatred and racism. Amina thought that Soojin might stop being her friend and that she would be left alone. However, an act of kindness from both the community and their school members showed unwavering support and helped in rebuilding the mosque.
