The life of John Bosco

John Bosco was born on August 16th, 1815 in Becchi, Italy. He was the youngest out of 3 sons and was raised mainly by their mother as John Bosco's father had died when John was 2. They were a very poor family, but despite their poverty, they always had enough to give to the homeless such as the ones who came to their doorstep which showed how much John and his family cared to look after the poor and needy. John was a very devout person, going to church most days. John helped out with the crops, and also with house work such as gathering firewood, however, his Catholic faith always remained in him and he always took the time to go to church. John's mother Margaret was a woman of tenderness and character, all who knew her called her Mama Margaret, she taught her sons that work was a privilege and that joy would make the work easier. Mama Margaret was a woman that stood before them as a pillar of goodness.

John was always hearing a low insistent voice of the Master calling him to do special assignments such as going out among the farm lads, not as a comrade but as a leader. On numerous occasions, he would come home with a battered cheek or torn shirt explaining to his mother that these boys don't go to catechism and church, so they don't know how to behave properly. Soon the voice took over as God's plan called for. He learned magic tricks from traveling showmen and soon he opened his own carnival show. The admission was that one rosary had to be recited by all spectators and the added attraction was the Sunday sermon repeated by the little ringmaster. The show grounds were in the fields that were in front of their house where Mama Margaret watched on wondering what was to become of her son.

The Greatest Commandment

34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together.35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

If we consider the World behind the text, many scholars believe that Matthew's Gospel was written at Antioch, a Greek-speaking city with a number of Jewish synagogues. Matthew's Gospel was written at a time of increasing tension between Jewish synagogues and Christian church over claims about truth and authenticity. Matthew 22:34-40 displays the antagonism between Jesus and his own community, he is shown in the conflict between the Pharisees and Sadducees. A Pharisee tested Jesus asking him “What is the Greatest Commandment in the Law?” Then Jesus answered him saying that you have to love the Lord God with all your heart and soul. That is the first and greatest commandment and the second is to love your neighbor as yourself. In terms of the World in front of the text, this teach of Jesus was included in the gospel as everyone in the world needed to have about 2 main commandments to live by, they had too many rules to live by (the Ten Commandments) and they needed main commandments that were easy to understand and to live by. Thus, Jesus answered and informed us about the 2 main commandments that humans had to live by; 1. Love the Lord God with all your heart and soul. 2. Love the neighbor as yourself. This teaching informs you to keep a perspective about your own religious practices and beliefs in relation to the Greatest Commandment. Another message is to carry out the Greatest Commandment which is to love the Lord God with all your heart and soul and to love your neighbor as yourself. Therefore, love everyone even your enemies. It doesn't matter if that person doesn't like you or if you don't like that person, you need to like that person, you need to love them and be able to help them if they are in need. For Jesus, it meant to practice justice to all human beings. Love your Lord God with your heart and soul means to love God and to love him like you love yourself and to love him like you love your family. You should love God as much as possible with all your heart and soul as you are made in the image and likeness of Him.

John Bosco relates to this teaching of Jesus and takes inspiration from it as he used the second greatest commandment in his life a lot. He loved everyone including the troubled, injured and disgraceful children. He loved them all and took care of them. John Bosco loved those boys even though the society rejected them and ignored them. John ignored the judgment of society and converted the boys from bad to good. John Bosco love everyone including enemies.

John Bosco wrote many letters to his fellow Salesians to teach them about his findings and thoughts. This particular letter was about the treatment of the boys and young men who visited the Oratory every day.

"The system in use in our schools, as you know, is the Preventive System, which consists essentially in disposing the pupils to obey not from fear or compulsion, but from persuasion. In this system, all force must be excluded, and in its place charity must be the mainspring of action.

The inspiration of my whole life, of my priestly efforts and ideals, has been my love for poor, abandoned youth. As all know, this is also the noble ideal of our Salesian Congregation. We are the friends of our boys. To learn how to command them, we must first learn to obey; and to make ourselves feared, we must first make ourselves loved."

This letter was written to the Salesians by John Bosco to teach them on how to teach the young boys and how to get them to listen. John talks about the system that was in use at schools of the time: the Preventive System. The Preventive System consist of influencing the students to obey not from fear or compulsion but from persuasion. This letter has made a significant impact on the Salesian Congregation's values and beliefs. The letters that John Bosco wrote to the Salesians changed and made up the values and beliefs they have now as every letter that their founder wrote to them had a valuable message to obtain.

Rerum Novarum is an Encyclical that was written by Pope Leo XIII on 15th of May, 1891. It is a document that has a set of Catholic social teachings that are valuable and important for the generation that was to come so, in particular, our generation. Rerum Novarum had a variety of helpful teachings on what to do with many different topics that affect the world such as helping the poor and giving enough to the poor so that they are not left unattended. Another major topic that is addressed in this encyclical is having fair working hours and wages and having the right amount of workloads for different people. Rerum Novarum is split into different 'sections' and 'parts'. It is said that John Bosco provided the perfect example of direct assistance to the horde of uneducated workers that were forced to work in dangerous, unregulated factories. John Bosco and his Salesians had started up hospitals and schools in Italy. John Bosco started orphanages which helped save many children's lives, he inspired the Rerum Novarum and the social teachings on helping the disheartened and poor and bringing them together.

Priestly, Prophetic and Kingly

The words and actions of Don Bosco showed a demonstration of all the works of Jesus. The way that Don Bosco demonstrated the Kingly work of Jesus is how Don Bosco was the leader of the ragged, disheartened boys. He set up an orphanage to home these boys and to teach them the ways of the Lord, he was a King, a leader to them. He converted them from bad to good.

The way that John Bosco demonstrated the Prophetic role of Jesus was when he spoke out about the troubled boys. He had a vision of a Woman and a Man. The Man told him that John won't be able to help the troubled boys with blows but with goodness and kindness. The Woman came after, performing a miracle right in front of John's eyes. She changed a pack of snarling, wild animals to a frolicking flock of lambs, with the animals representing the troubled boys. John showed his Prophetic role through his visions that he received from the Man and Woman that helped him to prophesy the events that were coming and how he had to help.

John Bosco showed the Priestly role of Jesus by bringing many disgraceful boys together on every Sunday of the week, he would spend time together with the boys and teach them about Jesus, he would hear their confessions and say Mass for them. John Bosco was literally a priest, he was ordained on June 5th, 1841 and with his ordination came the release of a powerful spiritual energy and joined with his rare human gifts made a lasting impression on the modern youth. Don Bosco had an astounding sense of values and as a result, he was able to temper his activity with deep, ceaseless, fervent piety. God rewarded him in glorious ways. Toward the end of Don Bosco's life, his prayers sought miracles. Don Bosco prayed so much that Pope Pius XI said of him that he prayed every moment of his life.

John Bosco had started up a new religious congregation that was called the Salesians. Today they are bound by one rule that was inspired by their founder, their all dedicated to the double task of self-sanctification and the care of youth. Today, there are over 15,000 brothers and sisters. Their mission is to be signs and bearers of God's love to young people. John Bosco wanted them to use their creativity and energy to bring the Gospel of Jesus to the youth. They have daily outreaches in schools, parishes, college campuses, youth centers and summer camps. The Salesians are a religious congregation that help in bringing together the youth of this day and teaching them about the Lord.
