(1883-1972)
She was a Texas suffragist and civil-rights activist who fought against lynching in the South. She founded the League of Women Voters in 1919 and was it's first president. She believed it was the women's responsibility to try to solve racial problems. She challenged the notion that white women needed protection from African American men.She pointed out the rapes of white women by man and lynching occurred because of racial hatred. Ames was successful in rallying the support of thousands of women and hundreds of public officials for the anti-lynching campaign. She made white women sign a pledge to do everything in their power to project their prisoners from being lynched. They had many campaigns to stop lynching fully. Her and her girls went into communities when there had been a lynching.Women were not safe, they knew about the constant dangers. In 1940 no lynching had been reported, the first since the civil war.

In 1906 she set up a mail-order business in Denver,Colorado with the help of her new husband Charles Walker. After they later divorced she kept his name. Her company became a success. It became a beauty school and opened officers. By 1916 she had the walker company all around the world including the United States. She believed in philanthropy and donated to YMCA, the NAACP and the the national association of colored women. She also gave grants to colleges. In 1912 national negro business league convention,League founder Booker T. Washington refused her request to be on the program. She spoke for the floor and sparked them so they invited her back and the following year she was a keynote speaker. In 1918 she gave the keynote speech at several NAACP fund-raises for the anti-lynching effort. She encouraged negro women to go get opportunities instead of waiting. Madam C.J Walker was a self made millionaire. She made more than $1 million. She made around $600,000 and $700,000.

Yes we still live in Jim Crow America today. We still face unjust rights and laws while dealing with courts and even police man.We had so much unfairness that there is now a movement called "Blacks Lives Matter."Not that it matters but it's still being handled.According to www.brennancenter.org ,while the laws are allegedly passed to secure elections, they impact communities of color in ways only reflected in Jim Crow past.Saying that blacks are impacted in different ways that only brings back up Jim Crow.According to www.BET.com it was a report saying that Jim Crow laws are still live. The center for Social Inclusion finds that people of color continue to face discrimination in the job market, just as they did years ago.Blacks aren't just facing Jim Crow in jails,or in public ,they are also facing this at a young age in schools.

Yes we still live in Jim Crow to this day. According to www.huffingtonpost.com those who were too poor, too mentally ill or too chemically dependent, still presumed innocent are kept i cages until their trail dates. No matter if it's fair to say, as the New York Times reported, our jails "have become vast warehouses made up Primarily of people too poor to post bail or too ill with mental health or drug problems to adequately care for themselves." Poor people have to rely on public defenders. Though anyone threatened with even a day in jail is entitled to a lawyer, the reality is much different . Many poor people facing misdemeanor charges never see a layer at all.
