They want me to have a better job because their jobs are very tiring and believe that because they didn’t study they got a job that is very physical. Also I don’t think it is good for parents to make their kids to follows their footsteps. The kid should study and have a career they want or they could be miserable. A person should have a career they love and work hard to have. They won’t have a future they want if it was already chosen for them when they are born. The pressure will for sure stress them out and be miserable. A parent should let their kids be who they want to be.

Question 3: My role model is my mom and godmother. They are so hard working. My mom works from Monday to Saturday and still makes time for me and my brother. She works at a restaurant and it involves a lot of heavy lifting. But when she gets homes she finds the strength to make us dinner even though she has been cooking all day. My mom even needs to put up with rude people at work. She even helps my brother and I if we need something for a project and not complain. My godmother helps my godfather with his business while taking care of 4 kids and studying to become a nurse. There is so much pressure she is under and still helps others in need like organizing a party or helping someone with their own company. Also I still can not believe her kids are in after school activities and still makes time to be with them. “All of her four brothers—Robert,Ken, Charlie, and Joe—were miners, and her sister, Mary, was the wife of a miner. Despite their father’s hideous accident, my father’s toe brothers were also miners...” (Hickman 12). 

This quote stood out to me since it shows that everyone in Homer’s family was a miner from his mom and dad’s side of the family. Also that even the women would marry the miners. This foreshadows that his father wants Homer to also be a miner like him and everyone else in his family. His father wants that to be his future but Homer has other plans for his future: to be an engineer. Homer can’t escape it since everyone’s family in Coalwood works in the coal mines and is expected for each adult male to do so too. I believe his father will pressure him to become a miner instead for Homer to follow his dream to be an engineer. 

Chapter 2:

“We were supposed to launch one this year too. I can’t believe the Russians beat us to it!”

This quote stood out because it shows the time of setting the story is taken place. Also that Homer is really interested in rockets and jets. He is very into knowing being an engineer and wanted to launch the first satellite in space. It stood out to me because it shows how nerdy he is about space and rockets. He sounds like me or anyone that acts towards their interests like sports. Then throughout the chapter he was thinking why no one is talking about the satellite which shows character development.

Hickman, Jr. believes family should be supportive and wants to be noticed. For example, to support his dream to make a rocket and believe in him is what he is asking for from his family and especially his father since his mother is already on board. As well for his father should notice him too not just Jim. “At the supper table that night... he announced that he is going to built a rocket...he doubts [his dad] even heard him. Jim snickered. Mom...said, ‘Well don’t blow yourself up” (Hickman 34). This shows that he was expecting positive reactions and  for his family to cheer him on which didn’t go that way. The only person that commented was his mother and his father didn’t even care. After the incident of Auk four at the mines a coworker of his father commented that Sonny wants to be a rocket scientist but his father responded, “He doesn’t know what he wants to be... But I know what he is... he’s a thief” (Hickman 94). His father doesn’t want Sonny to be a rocket scientist because it makes him look “bad”. Also that he is embarrassed of his son being himself. The way he reacts is not the way he acts towards Jim because he is proud his son is a football player. His father believes Sonny won’t be able to make a rocket fly and wants him to stop.
