Calderón was born into an upper-middle class family in Madrid, Spain, in 1600. His mother died when he was just 10 years old, and his father, a member of the Spanish nobility and secretary to the treasury, died when Calderón was 15. Calderón studied at the Jesuit College in Madrid, and he later began law at Salamanca, a university west of Madrid. From 1625 to 1635, Calderón served in Italy with the Spanish army, and in 1636, he was made a knight in the Order of Santiago—a religious and military order—by Philip IV, King of Spain and Portugal. Calderón fathered a son, Pedro José, during the late 1640s, but the boy’s mother died not long after giving birth. Calderón then entrusted his brother with the infant’s care before joining the priesthood. Throughout the course of his life, Calderón was a prolific writer, and he is generally accepted as one of the foremost playwrights of the Spanish Golden Age, a period of increased artistic expression that coincided with Spain’s emergence as a European power. Calderón wrote writing poetry, and he won several contests in the city of Madrid. He then moved on to playwriting, and by the time he was in his 40s, Calderón had penned over 70 plays, including Life is a Dream, The Phantom Lady, and The Mayor of Zalamea. He studied both religious and secular plays, and even wrote an opera, Celos aun Del aire matan (translation: Jealousy, even groundless, still kills) in 1660. Calderón is known most for his complex plots, rich characters, and poetic imagery. He was a staunch observer of the Christian faith, and his plays often promote moral integrity and instruction. Calderón wrote his last play in 1680 before dying just a year later at the age of 81.

His studies and beginnings of his art

Dedicating many hours of the day to the church, Pedro Calderón de la Barca enrolled at the University of Alcalá in 1614, but a year later he moved to Salamanca, where he continued his studies in arts, law and probably theology until 1619 or 1620. Abandoning an ecclesiastical career, he entered the service of the Constable of Castile and in 1623 began to write works for the court, quickly becoming the leading member of the small group of dramatic poets whom King Philip IV gathered around him. In 1636, the king made him a Knight of the Military Order of Santiago. Calderón's popularity was not limited to the court, since these first works were also acclaimed in public theaters, and after the death of Lope de Vega (1635) Calderón became the master of the Spanish scene. When the Catalan rebellion broke out, he enlisted in 1640 in a cavalry company of the military orders and served with distinction until 1642, when he was expelled from the army. In 1645 he entered the service of the Duke of Alba, probably as secretary.

In 1651 he announced that he would no longer write for the stage. This intention was maintained with respect to public theaters, but at the king's command he continued to write regularly for the court theater. He also wrote the two Corpus Christi plays for Madrid every year. Named prebendary of the Cathedral of Toledo, it was established in 1653. The beautiful meditative religious poem Psalle et sile (“Sing psalms and be silent”) is from this period. Upon receiving permission to maintain his prebend without residence, he returned to Madrid in 1657 and was appointed honorary chaplain of the king in 1663.
