  • It also showed how rich her family was (unbinded feet = she had to work → poor) (binded = she stayed home with the family → wealthy) 
  • The only way to marry into a wealthy family or to marry a man with money was to have binded feet

  • After having your feet binded girls and women would never be able to walk fluidly and smoothly again 
  • They could not walk very far either 
  • Foot binding is the breaking of the toes and the arch of the foot 
  • Some side effects of foot binding is pain in the pelvis 
  • Many experience pain there because many women have trouble walking and balancing and that leads to having a lot of weight down there and that causes pelvic pain 
  • Many women later on have found that they have gotten really painful arthritis in their feet 
  • It is so painful that they have to sit down and put their feet in a salt bath to try to sooth them a little bit

  • Foot binding started at a very young age so that they could get the pain over with and then they didn’t have to deal with it when they were older 
  • The process would start by soaking the girls feet in warm water and then scrubbing all the dead skin off and clipping the toes nails. When it finally came time for the binding they would wrap a bandage around the feet so that when the feet were broken and were in the process of binding the bandage would squeeze the feet tighter. 
  • Girls had to undergo this procedure multiple times every couple of days (getting their feet re bandaged up)

Feet binding got banned in 1912. Some women still do it in secret to keep the tradition of it going. It is more common in men in Russia (37%) and in women it is 17%. The reason for the being the most common there is because they do not have good diets and Russians stand a lot and work very hard.
