I often think of a family as two people and a child. I know a family could just be two people without a child, but I would say in general think about it is this way.

For the purpose of genetic counselling, family represents a biological connection linking common genetics, but can include non-blood relatives for support and psychosocial reasons.

Sharing a meal is something that says family to me. Family to me is multi-generational, not restricted to genetic relatives and is inclusive, loud, open and unapologetic.

I think of family as the important people in one's life. It is not limited to blood relatives and might not include them at all even if they are present. It is the people who can be relied on and provide support. I think non-relatives who are considered part of a family are also important to take into account in the context of genetic counselling because they are the clients support network (which is why I always add them to my client genograms!)

I agree, family for me is heavily revolved around sharing meals. Be that relatives or friends who come and joined the family, it all comes down to sharing food and bringing little parts of our childhood, countries and cultures with a massive dollop of love.

Family - Generations of people either blood related or related through marriage or partnerships who hold an important place in your life no matter how much or little you see of each other. Immediate family and extended family. For me I am closer to my cousin that my brother. Every family relationship is different - but family is family and for me it looks something like this.
