Online organised crime, which is a cyber-enabled crime is a large problem around the world. It can seriously affect the physical and financial security of the public and costs the transnational serious and organised crime (TSOC) $60 billion a year in Australia. They focus on areas such as black market firearms and dangerous goods, for example those used in the case below.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP), developed world-leading capabilities to see encrypted communication used by organised crime. The AFP operation 'ironside' found encrypted communications planning to kill people, have large amounts of drugs trafficked and distribution of guns. This operation consisted of 224 offenders being arrested on 526 charges in all mainland Australian states. Along with this they also took measures to stop 20 threats to kill, which could have saved not only that particular individual but those innocent around them.

The AFP controlled $4.44 million in assets from the Ironside investigation. These were from a man living in Sydney who was charged after the importation of a 'border controlled drug.' They made retraining orders on two properties (NSW, QLD) a Mercedes Benz and six bank accounts. The funds obtained from the sale of the assets are put into the Confiscated Assets Accounts managed by the Australian Financial Security Authority (AFSA). Which can then be distributed to benefit the community. Often it is used for prevention, intervention or diversion programs to prevent crime in the community.

The AFP worked with the FBI to access an app which they ran without criminal underworld knowledge. Commissioner Kershaw says that Australia is much safer because of the outcomes of operation ironside.

Most of the time online organised crime is operated by a group of individuals with their personal knowledge coming together to ensure their crimes are as encrypted and hard to access as possible. That is why there is a large number of task forces in Australia specifically created to track down those involved in online organised crime. The fraud Fusion Taskforce is just one example, they are a 'multi agency' partnership working to stop fraud and criminal activity online, including serious organised crime.
