A baby from birth to about 6 months old can recognize language sounds anywhere from parental interaction to interactive toys. Over the next six months, infants can begin to segment the stream of words they hear into words. A baby, at this stage, begins learning word boundaries. For example, a baby may recognize -nt to be at the end of words versus the beginning of them. A baby begins vocalizing through crying beginning from birth to indicate stress. They can also coo at 2 to 4 months and demonstrate interaction with their caregiver. Then they begin to babble in the middle of their first year. This shows a development in their speech. Infants begin using gestures about the age of 7 to 15 months. They learn pointing, nodding, shaking head no, and food gestures. A baby understands words before it can speak them, but it takes about 18 months for its first intelligible words can be heard. Eventually, the baby can learn two word utterances, which allow for the implementation of syntax to convey their meaning.
