-try to reach out to some peers so that they can work together and learn from one another
-Maria, being a tour guide, may have a lot of prior knowledge and experience that can be beneficial to the course as well
-others can learn from her through learning their shared experiences; much like the flipped classroom idea, students can learn from one another and have open discussion periods where they get to know one another and where everyone is in the learning process
- ask to see if she is able to get an extension on completing the course so that she is not overwhelmed by school and work
-Maria seems to fall into Stage 2 in the 'Staged Self-Directed Learning Model'; in this she is an interested student, who could benefit from a motivated teacher; this could be done by showing "inspiring lectures plus guided discussions, goal-setting and learning strategies" (Grow, 1996). This could help her get back into the course and refocus on the learning instead of getting overwhelmed. The educator can assist by allowing for more guided discussions in the classroom to allow for students to get to know each other and share their thoughts. It would also be beneficial to share learning strategies that may help her overcome the stress of the amount of reading she needs to do.

Maria is an outgoing tour guide who came to Canada on a one-year work visa to gain some international experience. She is here through a work exchange program available through her company. She is really enjoying her work and is making many new contacts. Two months into her year in Canada she decided to enroll in a part-time wine seminar. She is learning a lot about the wine regions and varietals in Canada, but is not enjoying the class. She doesn’t know any of her peers and finds herself having too much to read on top of her full-time work.
