The way the author puts the parents in the fore ground and marajane in the mid ground creates the mood of her walking in and saying something surprising. The way her face is drawn, is helpful for showing how she feels so serious about the matters. It helps answer essential question #4 because she is surving in the conflicted world by fighting back an standing up for what she believes in.

In the panel they use the differences betweeen black and white to show 2 different things going on. In the black part they hugging and being serious and in the white part different people are running away. This answers the essential question #5 because without the picture it would be harder to understand what's going on. But splitting the panel and having it all together makes it more understandable and connects it better. The way the speech bubble and pictures interact add another level of imagination to the story then there would be in a normal novel.

The author puts Marjane's parents in the mid ground walking away talking about their past life. Marjane is in the foreground and her facial expression shows her as confused. The way her face is shown and how there are like waves drawn around her head as if she is very surprised or confused about the situation. This panel helps answer the essential question #3 because she is in a world that is hard to live in. Everywhere she goes she has to wear her veil and she doesn't even understand why she needs to wear it. With everything happening in the world, the bombing, her uncle dying she lashes out and gets kicked out of school. Marjine has a very complicated life now and before the revolution she lived a fine life, she didn't have to wear the veil nor worry about all the things that were happening now in the revolution.

This panel answers the essential going from a child to an adult because she sees violence for the first time. She finally gets to see how her world is up close, her world is filled with violence and turmoil. If she wants to be apart of it she needs to act like a grown up would because in dangerous situations you can't act like a child.

Graphic novel elements: in this panel the speech bubbles shape shows how Marjane is shouting for her dad in fear. Her dialogue has a worried tone to it and the jagged speech bubbles enhances her yelling tone.

This panel answers the essential question 4 because the military is telling young men that they have to go out and fight. They say if you want to be a martyr for this country you will need to go out and show it by fighting for this country. The military practically brainwashes them to think that they will go fight for their country and be heroes, but the truth is the boys have no idea what they are going in to. They think that if they fight they will be a hero to everyone at home and if they die they will be accepted into a better afterlife. The author made the panel very big is shape and size to show how much it affected everyone. This has affected many in Iran because many go the young men had died. This was an awful that had happened and had a horrific outcome. Families had lost their son or brother because the military had convinced them to fight.

Essential Question: This panel answers the question of how we make sense in a conflicted world because marjane learns an important lesson from her grandma. We learn that we can learn from other people, usually adults, how to make sense of things. Marjane grandma tells her to stay true to herself which means to remember where she came from, remember your beliefs, your religion, and your family.

Graphic Novel Element: In this photo Marjane face is the main part of the panel. Her face really shows how she is determined to remember to stay true to who she is. She needs to remember as, she leaves her country, who she really is and what's she believes and the need is shown in her facial experession.

Marjane survives by thinking God is the reason her uncle was executed. She thinks the only way to feel better and to grieve is by getting rid of God in her life. She thinks it is all God's fault that these bad events are happening to her and she is mad he isn't there for her during these heart breaking times. She is having a hard time making sense in the world right now because she is so young and doesn't understand why God is doing this to her. She is feeling lost after losing her uncle and telling God to get out of her life. She has no bearings now and can't imagine life getting any worse. The background is outer space and it shows her floating in emptiness and that represents her confusion and loneliness without her bearings. The panel size also adds to the background by emphasizing this big moment in her life and how much it's impacting her in a negative way, therefore almost the entire page is black.

The way the author demonstrates this panel into the book is by answering the essential question 1. Marjane learns she will be leaving Iran by herself. Her parents decide to send her to Austria alone to grow up and to get a better French education there. Marjane thinks that leaving at fourteen is a bit young, she is concerned that she may not be able to take care of herself all the way in Austria will no one to help. She is about to experience a world where she will have to grow up and learn on her own, she will have to become an independent women in the world she is in. When she is thinking about leaving she believes her parents will never come back for her in Vienna, she thinks she will have to live the rest of her life alone and taking care of herself. By being alone with no one around means she will need to learn how to become a responsible adult as time goes on. Her face in the panel shows how hurt she is, because she thinks her parents are just abandoning her. She feels they don't even care and her tears and how scrunched her face is shows true feelings of sadness.

Marjane has formed her own beliefs based on what she thinks of world, her family's beliefs and what she learns in school. She is stuck in the middle, she is deep down very religious yet her family is more modern. This is why having to wear the vail is a huge conflict in her life. Society is influencing her to wear it because it's the law and even school is teaching her that it's the right thing to do. At home, her parents don't approve because of their modern beliefs and they have never worn the veils before. Marjane's face shows her confusion about what to think. She is upset about the changes as well, but maybe it's a good thing because she is very religious.
This image has a graphic weight because the contrast in the background draws attention to the image. In the background there's different shading to give more emphasis to the contrast of her emotions and thought processes. This shows her two sides of thinking and how everyone is her life is influencing her in different ways. The tools on the left side represent a more modern society and expresses what Marjane is capable of in life and her intelligence VS the right side of a more traditional society and follow society to be a religious woman (a more peaceful and simple background).
