My personal philosophy as a Developmental Services Worker is rooted in compassion, dignity, and the unwavering belief that every individual deserves the chance to live a meaningful, fulfilling, and self-directed life. For me, providing support is not only a profession—it is a calling shaped by my values, lived experiences, and lifelong commitment to advocacy and inclusion. I approach every interaction with respect, empathy, and the understanding that each person’s story, identity, and abilities are unique.

My motivation for this work is deeply influenced by my upbringing in Nigeria, where individuals with developmental disabilities often face stigma, neglect, and limited support. In many communities, there are few government structures or services that protect their safety and well-being. It broke my heart to see people with disabilities begging on the streets, unheard and unsupported. Witnessing such injustice inspired me to act and strengthened my desire to dedicate my life to being part of the change. It drives me to ensure that the individuals I support feel valued, respected, and empowered—never marginalized or forgotten.

I am a person-centered person, which means that my approach to care is always guided by the individual’s own needs, preferences, strengths, and goals. I strongly believe people should be the primary decision-makers in their own lives. I prefer support to be driven by what matters most to them—not by assumptions, routines, or convenience. This means truly listening, adjusting my support to their needs, and letting their voice guide every decision. Real support isn’t about leading the way—it’s about walking beside them as they shape their own path.

Two guiding principles shape my work: respect for individuality and empowerment through inclusion and advocacy. Respecting individuality means recognizing that every person has their own way of communicating, learning, processing emotions, and experiencing the world. This principle reminds me to be flexible, mindful, and patient in all environments and helps me build relationships rooted in trust, open communication, and mutual dignity. Empowerment and advocacy drive me to speak up for individuals’ rights, ensuring their needs and voices are heard clearly and confidently. Patience enables me to support individuals at their own pace, especially during moments of transition or challenge.

Ultimately, my personal philosophy is guided by the belief that people with developmental disabilities deserve acceptance, opportunities, and respect. From Nigeria to Canada, my journey has shaped my passion for standing with those who need support and helping to create a world where everyone feels seen, included, and valued. As a Developmental Services Worker, I am committed to person-centered care that uplifts individuals, honors their dignity, and supports them in living lives filled with purpose, independence, and joy.
