This is the E. coli bacteria up close. It is usually found in the intestines of humans and animals. Most strains of E. coli are harmless but some can cause infection. E. coli usually helps to digest food, produce vitamins and protect from harmful germs. However infections can be dangerous and range from simple food poisoning to sepsis.

Naturally, women are significantly more susceptible to getting urinary tract infections. This being said women have to be conscious of their hygiene and urinary health. UTI's that stem from E. coli are usually the cause of improper wiping. Since E. coli lives in the colon; wiping back to front cause cause the bacteria to move from the stool into the urethra.

I chose to cover Urinary Tract Infections that can derive from E. Coli. When UTI's are caused by E. coli it is because bacteria enters the urethra usually from the rectum. This bacteria can be harmful to your natural bacteria found in the bladder and urethra. UTI's can be simple inconveniences or they can sprout into serious issues. It is important to identify them early on, find out the cause, and completely finish treatment.

Urinary Tract Infections can have many symptoms. The most common symptom is a pain or burning sensation during urination. This is also known as dysuria. Another tell tale sign of a UTI is the frequent urge of having to urinate even if the bladder is empty. These are usually accompanied by cloudy urine and pelvic pain.

UTI's have a few different methods of treatment. Most commonly they are treated with antibiotics. The antibiotics are usually a short course of 3-7 days. This can vary based on type of infection and the bacteria that causes it. Over the counter pain medication can also be used to treat the discomfort of the symptoms. Extra fluid intake is also encouraged as this will flush out the urinary system. These make for a speedy recovery and a more tolerable experience. It is also very important to finish the entire treatment of antibiotics whether you feel better or not.

The prevention methods for getting a UTI are simple. UTI's that stem from E. coli are usually caused by improper hygiene. Wiping front to back so that fecal matter won't reach the urethra is vital. Washing with an antibacterial soap is also a good step to prevent bacteria from marinating down there. Adequate fluid intake and frequent urination can also be beneficial in prevention of a UTI, since it flushes out the bladder.

This is some extra information that didn't really tie in with any of the other slides. UTI's are not only a result of bad hygiene, but can have many causes. Sexual Intercourse can cause UTI's as well as overly fragrant feminine washes. Even diabetes have an effect on urinary health. It is also important to note that pregnancy and some methods of birth control can increase the chances of getting a UTI. These however are not the cause of E. coli, it's just useful information to know.
