Children usually start school at the age of six or seven. From three to six years old, they can attend kindergartens (preschool institutions). The initial stage of education, grades 1-6, covers students up to 11 years old, secondary education up to 17 years old. Almost all students pass the Unified National Test (UNT), which is both an entrance exam to universities and a final exam after leaving school.
By the nature of educational programs, education in Kazakhstan is divided into general and vocational education. There are the following levels of education: preschool education and training, secondary education, higher and postgraduate professional education.

Secondary education in Kazakhstan is compulsory and includes secondary general, primary vocational and secondary vocational education. Children are admitted to the first grade from 6-7 years old. Secondary general education in Kazakhstan contains 3 stages: primary (grades 1-4), basic (grades 5-9) and senior (grades 10-11). For the most complete development of gifted students, educational programs are being developed that are implemented in specialized schools for such children.

To acquire postgraduate professional education in Kazakhstan, a specialist or master's degree is required. The training of scientific personnel is carried out in the magistracy, postgraduate studies (military, legal) and doctoral studies at universities. Citizens of Kazakhstan have the right to be awarded, on a competitive basis, the Bolashak international scholarship for study abroad. The term of study in master's and postgraduate studies is 1-1.5 years, in doctoral studies - 3 years.
