These are a few examples of colour and style I would like to achieve in my work. The bright contrasting tones, paired with bold and sometimes overlapping visuals displays the feeling of having ADHD, and feeling like everything is overlapping and overwhelming in your mind.

Somerset House Trip- Cute exhibition

We visited Somerset House and the Cute Exhibition. In the exhibition I encountered many pieces of art and installations that reflected the chaotic and colourful direction I would like to achieve in my them. The image shown is an example of this: the combination of colour, texture and subject matter is particularly interesting, and a style I would like to capture in my artwork. The addition of abstract and exaggerated colour and shape is something I think will help to highlight my theme, as my theme is something that happens predominantly inside the mind.

This experiment was an attempt at combining abstract and realism through a 3D medium. I created a bust based on my own head, and added a creature that would be wrapped around and intertwined with the form, to represent an overwhelming force taking control of the subject. Though I feel I achieved what I aimed to create visually for this piece, I feel that it was unsuccessful as the concept is not conveyed well through the piece. This piece has shown me that I need to focus more on making my abstract forms more specific to my theme, and make my pieces less reliant on human forms.

Artist Research and Response - David Choe

i researched and responded digitally to David Choe, a multimedia artist who displays unique examples of colour, tone and form. to created this piece i spray painted a piece of wood to create a background, and digitally drew over that - david choe primarily uses spray paint and i felt that using the artists method would allow me to understand how his work is created. david choes use of colour and shape is something i feel is very effective for my theme, as it features a lot of abstract colour and shape, which is something i would like to utilise on my theme.

Researching different animation techniques and examples. This is a music video created for the song Cool about it by the band Boygenius. The video focuses on one main character going through a difficult time in her life. Not only is the story relevant to my theme, I feel that the animation style is something I’d like to take example from. Despite its lack of colour, the video shows unique ways of representing emotions such as despair and loneliness, without being to obvious. This is a technique I would like to use in my video.

Here I have been working on the animation for my final piece, this is a short clip of the into to my video, made using procreate. The use of eyes morphing into an abstract shape attempt to symbolise delving into the subjects mind, where the majority of the abstract imagery I will create will be set.

Experimentation with colour and text

I created this bright and colourful abstract background, using procreate, and overlayed handwritten text with the phrase “are you listening?”. The choice of this text was to put the viewer in the shoes of a person with adhd, always being in another world and often missing what is happening around them. “Are you listening?” Is a phrase I hear often, as more often than not- I wasn’t. This is a common issue for people with adhd, as ‘zoning out’ while trying to focus on the world around you is often and overwhelming experience. The use of bright and almost neon colours was a choice I made to create the most bright and visual,y unpleasant experience.

this is my first experiment with animation. i used a video that i took to animate over. this helped me gain an understanding of how to create seamless frames that go together well when animated. this was a very useful way of understanding movement in animation and learning about the time and effort it takes.

here i have studied the walking patterns of people with the intent on understanding how to animate them. i have studied the motions of the limbs and joints of a person when walking, and highlighted key features and details that make walking appear natural and organic when animated

Experiment with colour/ background

here i used procreate to create a digital painting of a lake view i created this piece to explore the usage of backgrounds in my animations. i feel that this piece did not achieve what i desired, due to the lack of detail on the figure constrasting with the detail on the background. though it was not successful, this piece has allowed me to understand the importance of detail on the main subject of my piece.

To create this section of my video, i researched MRi scans of the brains of people with ADHD, and was inspired by the colours and imagery. i created this animated piece to mimic an MRI. The bright and glowing colours contrasted with a dark background are effective in showing a. interesting depiction of a physical depiction of ADHD, with the lights eventually morphing into a figure/ head, that will transition the video into a more literal perspective.

this is a transition i created from the MRI scan frames to a portrait. This was created to effectively guide the perspective of the viewer into the next section of the video smoothly, while keeping on theme and continuing the colour scheme of the previous frames.

this is an experimentation with colour, tone and media inspired by the art of painter Kenneth Blom. his work features layered imagery which primarily depicts landscapes, figures and abstract shapes representing light. to create this piece i used an image of myself as reference, and drew using oil pastel. i used a combination of straight and messy lines to contrast the two different elements of the piece. i the freehand drew a ghostly figure behind myself and used smudging and scratching techniques to add depth to the drawing. i feel that Kenneth Blom's art is significant to my work because of his use of colour and detail. his scenes that he depicts are haunting and abstract, which i feel is effective in reference to my theme.

this is an experimental piece i created inspired by the style of online Artist KIMO. i experimented with the use of bright and bold colours, specifically cooler tones constrasting with warm ones. the sketchy style mimics that of Kimo, while adding my own details such as the abstract shapes and skull imagery/. i feel that this piece is effective visually, but does not convey my theme in a way i would like. the piece needs more detail that is specific to adhd. however it is a usefull experiment in colour and style and has helped to develop my skills with digital drawing.

similarly, this scene is of a classroom. this is a representation of the struggles that people with adhd face academically. it is common for people with adhd to have their academic success severely affected by their executive dysfunction, rapidly changing mood and innatentiveness. i digitally painted this scene with the intent of including an animated figure that would be seen visibly struggling. though i did not manage to finish this, i feel that the intended outcome would have been effective and useful.

Using reference images, i have digitally painted these backgrounds to signify key places that remind me of hard times in my life due to my adhd. the first, a bedroom scene is significant as it is common for myself and other people with adhd to be unable to get out of our places of comfort. an unfortunate circumstance of adhd is executive dysfunction, which means that despire their own wishes and efforts, the person is unable to allow themselves to do anything other than sit and procrastinate- even if they hate themselves for it.

This is a frame I created to represent what it is like inside the mind of a person with ADHD. the assorted TV’s stacked in the room represent the many overlapping and overwhelming thoughts an ADHD person experiences all the time, the TV’s will be animated to flicker and buffer, representing the unorganised and often confusing thoughts
