Something that stuck out to me during the interview process was how vulnerable we become in the moments immediately after our loss. My mother talked about how in her grief her emotions ruled over her in many ways, and made it difficult for her to act rationally. When we say someone has gotten over their grief, it is not so much that their loss has become any less painful to them. Rather, they have managed to deal with that pain and carry themselves to their next chapter in life. I saw this tree with its stumps from cut off branches as a sort of analogy for this. As we grow, we learn to live without these parts of ourselves, but the scars never heal over, and we never stop missing them. In the same way, the scars left in this tree simply become a part of its form.
