Nello, a poor orphan, dreamed of becoming an artist like Rubens. His only friend was Patrasche, a loyal dog he once rescued. After being falsely accused and losing everything, Nello wandered the cold streets of Antwerp. On Christmas Eve, he and Patrasche found shelter in the cathedral, where they peacefully passed away together. A statue near the cathedral honors their story—a reminder of love, loyalty, and dreams.

The LAMBIOMISTA MUSEUM - an artist called Koen Vanmechelen - What a day to start!! After having breakfast, we took a local bus and made our entrance to the museum. A local guide was waiting for us and guided us around an extraordinary place. I’ve just loved since the beginning. When you’ll visit it, be ready to think about opposite concepts and contrast ideas. You may need to look at different directions to understand the artist’s way of thinking.

Think outside the box!! Who said chickens? Be open-minded! Break out your mind! Do not break the rules! A protected Paradise. A place where biodiversity comes alive to build students’ foundations of sciences; althought they must develop their own knowledge to support the evolution of Mother Nature.

We visited La Biomista in Genk and I was struck by the Medusa sculpture. Koen Vanmechelen reimagines Medusa as a fusion of nature and industry, making her both haunting and captivating. The piece challenges our view of transformation and power—definitely a must-see!!

The Beguines were lay religious women who lived in semi-monastic communities starting from the 12th and 13th centuries. They did not take lifelong vows, nor were they officially part of any religious order. This autonomy allowed them to choose a spiritual life while retaining personal freedom — including the ability to leave the community, own property, and support themselves through work.

This is the oldest pit tower in the region. Getting the coal out of the mine was hard work, and also dangerous. The city of Genk was born around the mine.
