In fact, until 1922, a woman born and reared in the United States would lose her citizenship if she married a foreigner. She had to assume the citizenship of her husband. I chose these lines because saying this showed that Anthony looked deep into the specific lines of the Constitution to prove her point and that she did nothing wrong. This line is powerful because nowadays, it is ridiculous to think that voting could be a crime. I chose this quote because it shows how something may come to an "end" but it really didn't. The end of the Civil War marked the end of slavery, but that did not stop the prejudice that everyone still had against African Americans. It really did not change the overall treatment that African Americans experienced from white people. I found this to be a very strong and important line because it is just summarizing and really stating the truths behind the Constitution and specifically We the People. This concludes that these people discriminated against do not deserve any less because they are still people.

This line stood out to me because it Susan B. Anthony was very clever in asking this question. It was stated in the 14th Amendment that all people born in the U.S are citizens, therefore meaning that all women born in the U.S would be citizens with the full rights that come along with citizenship. The only other thing to be argued would be if women were people, which would be the only way they would be excluded from this amendment applying to them. In a place that claims it is a democracy, is it a crime to vote? America's foundation is built of the idea of freedom, and democracy, part of democracy is being able to vote. This first quote stood out to me because it showed how African Americans are being treated, were previously being treated, and how they felt. Even in 1865 there was still no change in the way African Americans experienced discrimination, even though a civil war brought an end to slavery. People were still being mistreated by the color of their skin and it was, and still is, hard to escape. The second quote stood out to me because it represents how woman were being treated as this time, where standing up for woman to vote actually made Susan B. Anthony get convicted and had to pay a fine. This quote is powerful because it shows the significance of how easily democracy can be lost.
