Cyclone Yasi started developing on the 29th January as a tropical low northwest and started following on a general westward track. By 10pm on the 30th January cyclone Yasi got its name from the Fiji Meteorological Service after strengthening to a cyclone category towards the North of Vanuatu. Yasi maintained a westward track and intensified to a Category 2 by 10am on 31st of January and then to a Category 3 by 4pm on that day.

On the 1st February Yasi increased to a category 4 at 7pm and started to head west-southwestward toward the Queensland coast.

Cyclone Yasi increased to a marginal category 5 at 4am on 2nd February. On the 3rd of February between 12-1am Yasi continued at its intensity and caused landfall on the southern tropical coast. This meant that there were damaging winds and rain because of the cyclones strong core.

See synoptic maps to the right:

Economic

The treasurer of Queensland Andrew Fraser expected that the damage from Cyclone Yasi would reach $800 million. The insurance industry claimed there were losses of $655 million and Cyclone related claims reached $800 million.

Social

Cyclone Yasi had a large social impact on the FNQ Community.

Businesses closed, patients who were in hospitals and nursing homes needed to be moved to a safer place.

Many people went without power over the time of the cyclone. 700 properties were without power because they had not been deemed safe.

Cyclone Yasi hit businesses meaning they were not able to function and as a result, they were temporarily closed.

Agricultural production costing $3000 million which put a huge stain on farmers and consequently, resources. Banana and sugar cane crops were some of the crop badly affected.

The people felt like they were forgotten, and some people felt they were given a strong sense of community with their recovery. General Slater said, "We can rebuild the roads and the bridges and the schools and the like, but what is going to take a long time is for people to rebuild their lives,"

Environmental

The cyclone left 300km (out of a 2400km long reef) of damage which varied in effect. The strong gush also washed toxic chemicals and debris into the ocean floor. Most researchers say that it with take the maximum of 20 years to grow and recover from Yasi.

The canopies of tropical trees were affected hugely by the cyclone they had hidden roots so they could survive the tropical cyclone Yasi

One of the largest impacts on the environment the cyclone had was on two endangered species, the Southern Cassowary and the Mahogany Glider. Cyclone Yasi also damaged their seriously endangered habitat.
