         <description><![CDATA[<div>The reference to prison conditions in the reading: That for prison to be effective, the conditions must be worse than that of the poorest working poor. Otherwise it will not be a deterrence.<br>I found this observation/information a fascinating topic. In our current era of legislation, prison conditions could not reflect the poorest of living conditions, as this would breach basic human rights. However, this leads to the conversation around why prison seems to be so ineffective as a deterrent in modern day punishment.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The way in which prisoners were dealt with compared to now seems a lot more harsh, considering they were hung for quite literally everything compared to&nbsp; now where the only punishment in Australia is imprisonment. It is interesting to see how the values of the UK justice system has changed overtime.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>
