What also struck us as somewhat problematic was his use of the term victims, as it depicts people as completely passive and as not having any agency. A better approach might have maybe been to talk about the colonized, oppressed or invaded and exploited people and to mention the ways in which resistance has happened as well. However, all in all, we find his request to listen to the voices that have so far mostly gone unheard and to change perspective and challenge the narratives that are in place very important, absolutely necessary and urgent (cf. 491f.).

As far as the concept of modernity is mainly influenced by Eurocentrism, it seems to be challenging to include the postulated ethical headings in the maintaining approaches of globalization. One of the mainly problems could be that Eurocentrism itself is defined as not inclusive for different perspectives and approaches.

We believe that Dussel’s text includes very important aspects that need to be considered since he mentions the importance of perspectives outside the Eurocentric one and encourages us to question the narratives in place. In comparison to the authors of the book “Global Transformation”, he grew up in Latin America, which already results in him having a different perspective and outlook. However, he is also a white male, and his education is influenced by Eurocentric views due to his studies in Madrid for example.

There seems to be one type of system which isn’t fallible and therefore needs to be established globally. The categories used for finding this kind of systems are closely linked to efficiency and not to the human life-death criterion. Additionally, it seems to be difficult to include alternative approaches and perspectives due to the power related to the Eurocentrism. Therefore, it is nearly impossible for the victims to take action unless there is suppression by power.

Even though it probably is uncontroversial that Dussel has a point with his critique of the Eurocentrism and colonization, one must criticize that he focuses only on the negative aspects and oversees the positive aspects. For example, it might be true that the European idea of modernity might have been one of the reasons which have created a European understanding of the own superiority over other people and thus have led to colonization. But he ignores the fact that with the beginning of the 16th century, which he claimed to be the beginning of modernity, also the development of the human rights started.

Another critique relates to Dussel’s Ethics of Liberation. Even though the basic idea seems to be clear, his theory lacks a lot of argumentations. It does not become clear at all how such
a transformation according to his mind should proceed. He should have spent some more time on elaborating important details about a possible implementation of his doctrine.
