I would use the hand in-pass out to test understanding of smaller section units as I really like the idea of anonymously answering questions and grading others work as well so you really know each student is hearing the correct answers. I think the visualize (be the illustrator) would be really fun as well as a student can use their imagination and draw what they are understanding of a story as the teacher is reading.
