The stars are shining 
The seven beautiful stars 
That’s matariki

At night in the winter sky

They are eyes of God

Special? For me not much, Maori so much

It starts a new year, new goals, new thoughts and maybe a new you

Matariki is a cluster of seven stars in the school commonly known to the world as Pleiades. It is the most common and well known cluster of stars in the world. For the Maori though it is also a time of harvest and well being.

The literal meaning to Matariki is small eyes as mata means eyes and riki means small.

Matariki represents health and wellbeing.

Waiti represents all of the food from fresh water.

Waita represents all the food from the sea.

Tupu-a-nuku represents all the food and crops that grow from the earth.

Tupu-a-rangi represents all the food that grows from the trees.

Waipuna-rangi represents the weather.

Ururangi represents the winds.

Pohutakawa is the oldest and guides all of our whanau and friends have recently pasted away.

Hiwaiterangi is the youngest and is considered the wishing star.

We can find Matariki by looking for another group of stars in the shape of a triangle then looking to the left of it.

Matrariki is a constellation, representing the Māori new year with bright stars dimmer stars here and there, listen closely because I’m going to say there names, so grab a seat grab a chair I promise it won’t be lame. There’s Waitī, Waitā, Waipuna-ā-Rangi, Tipu-ā-Nuku and Tipu-ā-rangi, Ururangi and Matariki.

This Term we will be looking deeper into the Māori New Year, Matariki. As Matariki draws nearer to appear in the early morning sky before the sun rises to mark the beginning of the Māori New Year, you will be learning karakia, waiata and a few other things to add to your kete matauranga (knowledge basket) so that you can share with your whanau.

My personal meaning of Matariki is a time to reset and refresh. It is the Maori new year and I feel it is a good time to set goals and dont worry about the past. I also believe that it a great time to spend time with loved ones.

Matariki to me is a time to rejoice and interact with your family it’s a time to be outside and enjoying life not to be worrying.

The Pleiades, or Seven Sisters, have always been important to astronomers. They took pride of place in Greek legend and have made their way into many tales, especially from the sea. One old Pacific legend tells of Matariki, the mother surrounded by her six daughters. 

In Maori Matariki means 'tiny eyes' or 'eyes of God'. The children of the earth mother Papatuanuku and sky father, Ranginui, were divided over whether to separate them and bring light and life to the earth. Eventually, Tane Mahuta, the god of the forest, laid on his back and used his feet to force them apart. But Tawhirimatea, the god of the winds, did not agree with his brother's actions. He thought that separating his parents was cruel. He was so angry he tore out his own eyes and threw them into the heavens where they have looked down on man ever since. 

The eyes of Tawhirimatea have become many constellations, and among them live Matariki, the mother and her seven sisters. They rise after the winter solstice, and use their mana - their power - to help the weakened sun on his journey back south. 

Matariki is a time of renewal and an opportunity to reflect on who we are at this moment in time, and build connections with our whanau. 



In pain at the separation of his parents, Tāwhirimātea gouged out his eyes and threw the pieces into the Milky Way galaxy.  Matariki has been thought to mean either the ‘eyes of god’ (mata ariki) or ‘little eyes’ (mata riki). However, according to Dr Rangi Mātāmua, there are no stories to support the meaning 'little eyes'. Rather, Matariki is an abbreviation of ‘Ngā Mata o te Ariki’ – The Eyes of the God. In other cultures, the star cluster is also known by other names - the Hawaiian name is “Makali‘i” or eyes of royalty, and in Japan it is “Subaru” meaning gathered together.

Some say martariki is when Ranginui, the sky father, and Papatūānuku, the earth mother were separated by their offspring, the god of the winds, Tāwhirimātea, became angry, tearing out his eyes and hurling them into the heavens.

While wandering through the woods one day, they were spied by Orion, who gave chase. To save them from Orion's dishonorable intentions, Zeus transformed them into stars and placed them in the sky. A number of ancient temples on the Acropolis in Athens face the direction where the Pleiades rise.

Here is one Matariki story I know:

Ranginui and papatuanuku were once close together, it was all dark and Tane Mahuta and some other of his siblings didn’t like this. Tane Mahuta ( the god of forests) decided to separate them with his legs. Tawhirimatea ( the god of wind ) was so enraged he went off and fought all his siblings. The god of war ( tumatauenga) decided enough was enough. They fought and Tu won. Tawhirimatea was so angry he tore out his eyes creating a cluster of stars. Matariki means : Gods eyes.

This is the story of the seven stars one of which is invisible which is why you can only see six stars. The Japanese celebrate this by planting cherry blossom trees and doing other things like sushi classes and martial arts demonstration.
